About Jeffery Holley
As a master's student in architectural and art history at the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture, I explore the world through the stories embedded in our cultural landscapes—the places, spaces, and objects that shape who we are. Every building, garden, and piece of material culture holds a narrative, sometimes complex and layered like a puzzle. My work is about uncovering and examining these narratives from all angles to build a richer, more inclusive understanding of history.I’m particularly passionate about amplifying voices that often go unheard, using my research to bring these stories to light. For me, this is at the core of preserving our history, caring for our environment, and connecting on a deeper level.Sustainability goes beyond environmental care. It encompasses a commitment to social equity, local economies, and honoring the layered histories that shape our neighborhoods. True sustainability acknowledges the full spectrum of our shared experience—racial topographies, outsider preservation, and the effects of displacement within our communities. By weaving these stories into our cultural fabric, I aim to foster a future where everyone’s experiences are valued and every voice has a place. My research focuses on American post-domestic cultural landscapes, examining everything from grand estates to vernacular structures. Each one offers a unique perspective, revealing past generations' skills, values, and changes. Architecture, at its best, invites us to feel awe and wonder. It’s a powerful reminder that we’re all part of a bigger story that spans time and connects us to those who came before.Through Character Home, I combine my interests across disciplines—from architecture and decorative arts to fashion, gardens, and industrial design. This project allows me to craft a cohesive narrative that speaks to the tangible, intangible, and emotional aspects of what makes a home meaningful. By studying the evolution of these spaces, I hope to guide others toward a deeper appreciation of the places we call home and celebrate the unique contributions each of us brings to our shared world.Feel free to reach out if you’re curious about how I approach my work or want to chat about cultural landscapes, architecture, or history. And if you see me in the downtown mall in Charlottesville, headphones on, feel free to say hello—I’ll be glad to buy you a coffee and hear what you’re working on!
