Etsy Shop
As much as I love copywriting and proofreading, it's great to balance my time so I can also design and sell my own handmade crafts. Originally selling through Etsy, the majority of orders are now direct: all custom designs, made to order. Everything is made by me in sunny Staffordshire, and can be found on my Inside Out Oatcakes Instagram page, and – when I get time to restock the shop – back on insideoutoatcakes.etsy.com

Working as part of the studio team, I would proofread both printed literature and online media both before and after the artwork stage. I have also contributed to maintaining some of the agency's clients' websites and have created copy from scratch for several high profile clients, including CITB, AHDB, Michelin, WRAP, Love Food Hate Waste, Hull City Council, Birmingham City Council and JCB. This often entailed following different house styles for every client, and regularly switching between accounts, so I had to ensure I was well organised and able to correctly prioritise my work. The diversity in my daily workload meant that I worked on both digital and hard copy formats, spotting both technical errors and layout inconsistencies. Previous assignments have included copywriting integrated press release campaigns, radio advert scripts, brochures, leaflets, posters, and social media campaigns. I would proofread all work put through the agency, including Annual Report and Accounts for several clients and complex technical documents.

As a fulltime proofreader, with additional copyediting duties, in a busy multiplatform publishing organisation, I was part of a close-knit team of three who’d regularly liaise between the many different departments in the company. As well as attending numerous interdepartmental meetings, we worked closely with the subeditors and were trusted to manage our own workload and schedules. We’d rotate the checking of electronic preliminary copies of editorials and advertorials in Word, with checking the hard copies once they had been set by the studio, including adverts, covers, indexes, contents pages etc. We were responsible for checking all aspects of the books from cover to cover, including consistency in the layout and house style, using the British Standards Institution’s proofreading symbols. We were also responsible for checking the various websites the company had under its umbrella, and used WYSIWYG content management systems for these. The events website was continually changing and we had to cross-reference the information with the guidebooks when they came through for proofreading, usually with a very tight turnaround time. Our team was also responsible for amending and clarifying the job adverts for the company, which were for positions across the UK.
My primary role comprised proofreading and copywriting for both websites and printed literature for a wide variety of clients; from hardware suppliers to 4* hotels. Nearly all of my work involved using a computer so I am highly computer literate in the majority of Microsoft Office applications. My duties involved heavy use of Word, as well as some Excel and Access database management, and I am well aware of email protocols and internet usage. I was responsible for answering incoming calls and the large amount of inbound post and emails, which made me the first point of contact with many clients. Following this I have built on my existing customer service skills. Similarly, I often had to deal with suppliers and source unusual materials for print or production, a task that required a speedy, thorough and often resourceful approach. One of the biggest organisational tasks I performed each month was to collate invoices while simultaneously chasing purchase orders. Likewise, I had responsibility for processing quotes to go to clients.Frequently I would also be required to undertake PA duties and was entrusted with booking flights, ferries and hotels. This involved risk assessments when staff would go off site to do installations. I became a very valued member of the team and would frequently be called upon when there was a problem that needed a creative solution.
