About Charlene Rogers

Time and again, throughout my career, I’ve found myself underestimated.Until I’m not.Whether this underestimation is rooted in my being new to a particular industry, in my outsider status, or it exists in spite of my deep expertise in the subject at hand, whether it’s due to my gender or my humble upbringing, or perhaps exists for no real reason at all, few things thrill me more than defying expectations and achieving measurable, undeniable results in the face of doubts and naysayers. One thing, however, that does mimic that thrill, is identifying those with leadership potential that has perhaps gone unnoticed by the same people who may not have noticed me. I pride myself on my ability to spot talent, mentor, and develop future leaders. At multiple organizations, I’ve built a reputation for developing talent. At Starbucks, I promoted ~100 employees in 3 years and was gifted a literal bench in recognition of my work developing highly effective leaders and creating a “bench” of future managers. At Cava, all 11 of my direct reports are employees I’ve developed and elevated to General Managers. These new leaders are more than a bench from which others can hire, they are also the core of my own high-performing teams. My teams and I are often called upon to turn around struggling locations or test and develop new procedures. This is due to my long list of impressive accomplishments and effectiveness in diverse, challenging scenarios. Just a few of my major accomplishments include:✓ I converted 11 Zoës Kitchens into Cavas in 5 months, opening 32 new restaurants in total, without the departure of a single GM, outperforming the company’s post-acquisition GM retention rate by 50%.✓ I protected brand reputation by testing and launching an internal delivery operation, which was rolled out nationwide following its initial success, replacing reliance on 3 rd party drivers.✓ I led the roll out of a new training protocol for Starbucks, called Playbook, across North Texas and Oklahoma, visiting 400 locations in just 6 months to train District Managers and provide feedback on the progress of implementation. These accomplishments were all made possible by my ability to build high-performing teams through the development of leaders I both invest and believe in. Wherever my next destination, I look forward to supporting the teams I’ve yet to build. We will continue to defy expectations and accomplish extraordinary things.

Charlene Rogers Work Experience Details
  • Cava
    Area Lead
    Cava Jan 2021 - Present
    Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex
I was tapped as Area Leader to guide the second market conversion from Zoës Kitchen to Cava following the acquisition of Zoës by Cava Group. The first Area Leader not selected from Cava management internally, I was tasked with providing proof of concept that locations could be converted profitably following an unsuccessful first attempt in the Colorado market. I converted 11 restaurants in the first 5 months without losing a single GM. I was also instrumental in the conversion of all 32 DFW locations at a rate of 1 location every 45 days. I lead a team of 11 direct and 220 indirect reports with direct responsibility for 11 restaurants and a $20M annual budget. I provide mentorship to 2 of the 3 other North Texas Area Leaders.Select Results:✓ I achieved Cost of Goods Sold at 90% of the stores under my management, which collectively outperformed the company average by 4%, through efforts such as incentivizing portion control with pre-shift tests in which employees were rewarded with gift cards for accurately scooping correct amount of chicken, resulting in the best CoG numbers in the region.✓ I drove a 9% increase in guest count and 20% increase in targeted sales through data-driven contests designed in collaboration with my supervisor to support the immediate needs of area restaurants.✓ I earned 100% food safety compliance with all 11 restaurants passing 2 food safety audit cycles by promoting the “Figure 8” food safety check, a system of checking 8 priority items that was eventually adopted by all North Texas locations.✓ I developed all 11 area General Managers from Cava team members through my ability to identify and nurture talent and by leveraging my strong relationships to secure promotions for direct reports.
  • Zoes Kitchen
    Regional Operations Manager
    Zoes Kitchen May 2017 - Jan 2021
    Dallas, Texas
I was hired to turn around the understaffed and underperforming Dallas market. I brought in additional staff and promoted key team members, growing the district to #1 in catering and Cost of Goods out of 25 company districts within 1 year. I managed a team of 11 direct and 250 indirect reports, as well as a $20M budget.Select Results:✓ I boosted sales, improved efficiency, and earned the trust of my employees by allowing team members to propose use cases for deploying 1 additional employee at each location and by providing said employee as proposed.✓ I protected brand reputation by testing and launching an internal delivery operation, which was rolled out nationwide following its initial success, serving customers using employees invested in the company’s reputation as opposed to third-party drivers.✓ I increased online sales by 20% by introducing “channel” production lines to process online orders separately from in-person orders, improving on-time deliveries by using technique learned from Starbucks drive-thru operation.✓ I retained 100% of General Managers through the 2018 acquisition, drastically outperforming an average of 50% GM departure throughout organization.
  • Starbucks
    District Manager
    Starbucks 2006 - May 2017
I was promoted as a North Texas multi-unit leader and achieved Rookie of the Year for North America in my first year as District Manager. I was moved between locations to turnaround low numbers due to my record of high performance, boosting revenue by 15-20% at each location. I maintained ~60% retention at stores under my leadership, vastly outperforming the industry standard of 125%. I led a team of 14 direct and 300 indirect reports with a $30M budget responsibility.Select Results:✓ I launched standardized methods for making espresso drinks using lean principles, improving consistency and efficiency. The success of these methods resulted in an eventual company-wide roll-out.✓ I completed the Leadership and Action training by attending a week-long business simulation in Seattle to learn new strategies and leadership techniques, a program to which only ~5% of managers are accepted.✓ I improved sales for the Starbucks Evenings program by 30% through creative staffing and role reassignment.✓ I achieved food UPH of 50+, meaning 50% of guests attached food to their drink orders, by pulling food twice instead of once per day, a technique soon rolled out companywide ensuring cases never ran out of food.
  • Starbucks
    Tla Regional Director
    Starbucks Jan 2015 - Jun 2015
  • Starbucks
    General Manager
    Starbucks 2006 - 2009
I was hired to lead a Dallas Starbucks location. I launched influential employee engagement initiatives including “Welcome to Your Shift,” to share company initiatives with team members at the start of every shift, a practice soon adopted by entire region. I created a 7-step, standardized and equitable promotion roadmap, which would be implemented by the District Manager to replace haphazard promotion practices, ultimately lowering turnover from 100% to 80% annually.
