Charlene D. Slaughter is the director of communications for Experience Columbia SC. She came to the Experience Columbia in February of 2018 after serving as marketing and communications manager for academic programs at the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business and assistant vice president for communications and marketing at Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C. Slaughter is a mass communication graduate of Winthrop University and holds a Master of Professional Studies in strategic public relations from The George Washington University. In addition to her career in public relations and marketing, Slaughter was a print journalist for more than 10 years and served in numerous positions including sports writer, news writer, city editor, sports editor and special assignments reporter. She won six South Carolina Press Association writing awards during her tenure at The Times and Democrat in Orangeburg including first place awards for enterprise reporting and profile feature writing. At Experience Columbia SC she serves as a key member of the communications and marketing staff and implements initiatives in support of ECSC’s overall communications and media relations goals for the Columbia region. As one of the biggest cheerleaders for the heart of South Carolina, Slaughter and the communications team educate potential visitors about the region year-round through earned media and public relations campaigns. The Pimento Cheese Passport campaign earned the 2019 SCPRSA Mercury Awards Award of Merit and Slaughter also oversees the production of the annual Insider’s Guide for Experience Columbia SC. Slaughter, a native of St. Matthews, S.C., earned the APR in July 2021.
