In Mexico, it is called an asociación civil and this allows us to to do much more as advocates for animal rights. Because we adopt many dogs to the US and have a large US following, we formed Hope 4 La Pawz as a US 501c3 charity based in Washington State which is where most of our rescued dogs end up living out their lives with their adoptive families. Our goal is the end the suffering of these innocent creatures with free spay/neuter (called "esterilización") clinics that also include free vaccines and some meds to the low income populations that cannot even put enough gas in their cars to take their dogs for free spay/neuter at the local facility in town. After retiring with my husband to La Paz, BCS, Mexico - a little seaside city on the Baja Peninsula that borders the Sea of Cortez - we were saddened by the number of stray and abandoned dogs we saw. We began rescuing and started volunteering with Hope 4 La Pawz, Inc. - a US Charity founded to help the dogs of La Paz. But soon, we realized in order to effectively work on the problem in Mexico, we needed to form a Mexican Charity - Asociacion civil - as they are called. We work with the local community of rescuers (called rescatistas) to take dogs off the streets, rehabilitate them, foster them, and then find permanent, loving homes for them here in Mexico, in the US, and in Canada.We run a wellness clinic, dog training program, food pantry program, and transportation program (shipping adopted dogs to their furever homes).We do not send dogs to shelters in the US or Canada - or even here in Mexico. All are fostered until adopted. We build a comprehensive profile of each dog including medical history and temperament assessments (cat-friendliness, leash-training, etc.).We now have many expats joining the team of rescatistas so our work is all bilingual and multi-cultural making it one of the most challenging things I have every taken on in my life.Since we started this work we have rescued and found homes for over 450 dogs and we average 50 dogs in foster care at any given time.We are a 100% volunteer run organization and without a shelter (hence no rent payment or salaries to shelter workers) more goes to the direct care of these dogs.
