Dr. James crafts and implements strategy-rich Curriculum in the areas of Student Success, Career Branding, Networking, Faculty Development & Instructional Communication. Previously the Director for The Center for Legal Pedagogy at Thurgood Marshall School of Law, she is now the Executive Director for Student Academic Support Services and The First Year Experience at Texas Southern University. She oversees The Academic Skill Center, Tutorial Center, Freshman Advising Suite, and Academic Support programs in this role. She plays an integral role in both recruitment and retention initiatives for First Year students, as well as those in high-risk populations. She has created programs in Bias management for students at Texas Southern University, Branding & Professional Training workshops for The Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals, Hollins University, Richland Community College, Texas Association of Black Professional Educators, conducted Networking training for students at The University of Texas School of Public Health, and helps many other professionals and Small Businesses think outside of the box to maximize their business and career goals. Ms. James designs career curriculum that maximizes the needs of the Millennial Learner to increase effectiveness in the College Classroom, with a focus on faculty development. She has written curriculum for several colleges, assists faculty in designing curriculum and facilitating lessons for effective learning, and is quickly becoming someone faculty call on for instructional support and redesign. Her specialty? Taking dense content and designing multi modal curriculum that makes tough concepts easier to understand.Charlene also served as an Executive Board Member of the Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals, and sits on the Advisory Board of The Greater Houston Youth Nutcracker Project.

Within her first year, Dr. James has led freshman registration initiatives that resulted in 90% of the freshman class being registered for the Spring semester within the first week of registration, directed the new Freshman Advising Center to set record student success numbers, re-vamped the Tutorial Center which is now undergoing processes to be nationally certified, supports Freshman Orientation, serves on the Summer of Success Committee, and is co-chair of the Enrollment and Retention sub-committee. The Center for Legal Pedagogy was formally established in the fall of 1999, at a time when such centers of pedagogical legal research were rare. Charged with the study of legal education, more than 20 years later, the Center for Legal Pedagogy serves as an instructional hub for both faculty and students at Thurgood Marshall School of Law.The Center for Legal Pedagogy is dedicated to the study and creation of instructional design for legal education. We support faculty members by providing them with multi-modal resources that are strategic, purposeful, and effective. Instruction materials include, but are not limited to, researching and designing instructional programs, curating active resources, facilitating educational workshops, overseeing instructional programs for faculty and students, and engaging in collaborative teaching projects. Furthermore, everything we create and share curate is undergirded by Thurgood Marshall School of Law’s core competencies. Thurgood Marshall School of Law is still ahead of the pedagogical curve and we are one of only a few law schools that has a dedicated faculty-only website for instructional support. The website is set to launch in August 2016. We are also a supportive arm for assessment, tutoring, and the Prep for Law Pre-Orientation program. This year, we are looking forward to building new curriculum for a Professional Identity module to be taught in the main student orientation as well.
