As Sr. Labor and Employment Counsel, I support several ministries in the Providence St. Joseph Health system on labor relations and employment issues.

As Managing Associate, I worked to assist employers with all manner of labor relations and employee relations issues.In my labor relations practice, I focused on working with employers to manage union relationships with an emphasis on achieving employer goals with minimum disruption to the workplace. My practice has focused on working with employers on union avoidance training, contract negotiations, arbitrations, defense of charges before the National Labor Relations Board, and general contract interpretation and management.With respect to employee relations, I worked with employers on drafting and implementing lawful policies and procedures in an ever-shifting legal environment, managing the day-to-day employer-employee relationship, and identifying potential trouble spots for employers in their relationship with employees, all with the goal of avoiding litigation. When litigation could not be avoided, I assisted employers in aggressively defending lawsuits in a cost-effective and common-sense manner, exploring all options for defense and counseling employers on the best course of action.

As an Associate General Counsel, I supported ResCare operations nationwide. Among my primary duties was the negotiation and administration of collective bargaining agreements with SEIU, Teamsters, UFCW, and Steelworkers, among other labor organizations. Additionally, I advised ResCare's organized operations regarding contract interpretation issues and other labor relations matters, including acting as a guide through the grievance process and chairing meditations and arbitrations related to that process. My duties also included addressing the multivarious employment issues facing a company with 50,000 employees. In that role, I provided counsel and guidance to operations, worked closely with outside counsel on employment litigation and administrative matters, and drafted and revised statements of position to the National Labor Relations Board, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and state and local agencies.I also worked closely with the General Counsel and other Associate General Counsels on non-employment litigation and other legal issues facing ResCare.

As an Associate Attorney with Smith & Smith, I counseled employers on a variety of employment issues, including the FLSA, Title VII, ADA, the ADEA, the FMLA, and the Kentucky Civil Rights Act (“KCRA”). In connection with the preceding, I have conducted and produced discovery materials, prosecuted and defended depositions, drafted responsive pleadings, and drafted several successful dispositive motions for employment-related proceedings in state and federal courts. I also represented employers in labor-relations matters, including contract negotiation, administration of collective bargaining agreements, assisting with arbitration hearings, drafting of post-arbitration briefs, filing and defending unfair labor practice charges, and drafting statements of position and post-hearing briefs to the NLRB.My practice also required me to draft and revise employment contracts, separation agreements, and other employment-related documents. Additionally, I have drafted and revised employee handbooks, with a focus on balancing the goals of the employer with compliance with federal and state laws.
