Profile bio

About Charles Climer

Not toiling in a corporate environment any more, but read on if you choose As my career progressed, my focus on the business aspects of my workplace interactions increasedEarlier in my career, I was most interested in maintaining my proficiency in the latest whiz bang technologies. This engineering focus drove a number of career and industry changes as I honed and applied my craft. My desire to avoid technical career stagnation often drove a change of industry—military and aviation electronics, telecommunications and medical devices. There was much to learn, and the environment was totally different and exciting in each industry. To satisfy my “fire in the belly,” some changes took me to a startup or to a company of much different size or to a company that was struggling financially. Some of these organizations failed, and these failures led to my increased interest in the businesses activities supporting my technical venturing. I began to wonder: “How do I make more informed risk decisions when I choose a company to apply my craft?”; “What factors lead to company failure?”; “Were the failures a result of bad management decisions?” I first sought answers by obtaining my Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate; and I earned my MBA to continue the journey.I always had an interest in how my work fits into the overall big picture of the goals of our organization. As I matured, I got just as much satisfaction with knowing "how a project adds value" as I had earlier in my career with "how neat is the technology?". All that is moot now as I ease into not caring about much of anything except family.

Principle Electrical Hw Engineer

Boston, Massachusetts, United States

The Advanced Engineering group is chartered with applying engineering talent to the goals of maintaining uninterrupted operational excellence and with continuous improvement of operational activities. This results in three types of projects:• Sustaining engineering projects which support continued production of revenue generating product lines.• Engineering projects for product enhancement and resolution of latent design issues.• Engineering projects for operational efficiency. Examples are contract manufacturer changes, supplier consolidations and production facility moves. These activities are rarely greenfield projects and require significant cross functional coordination across the organization to ensure smooth transition for the project’s outputs..Across our projects my contributions include:• Engineering individual contributor role as subject matter expert for resolution of the most challenging problems in the electrical engineering arena. These are consistent with my expertise in embedded systems, printed circuit board development and FPGA development.• Project management for both equipment and disposables projects. As product manager, my role is not as subject matter expert--my role is to ensure project schedule, to provide mentorship, and to coordinate among a cross functional team. These projects are not always within my technical area of expertise. Recently, management of projects not in my area of technical expertise presented challenges which I found most rewarding.
