We are currently carrying out a series of interviews/meetings with leaders in the Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland. This is comprised of Tribal leaders, family elders, village chiefs, Mullahs and Sheiks of the region. This report is critical as this region is unstable and in upheaval, driven by various factors, economics, criminal activities (smuggling, drugs, weapons and others), nationalism, territorial disputes and radical Islam.The final report will cover areas such as: the leader’s position on the radical Islamic elements in the Horn of Africa region, their goals for their communities, what are their relations with other tribes and clans, their understanding of Islam and what is correct. What are the conflicts between their traditional Islamic beliefs and the radical Islamist?This will be accomplished through polling, structured interviews: surveys: qualitative/quantitative research: atmospherics: assessments and monitoring.A summary will outline local traditions, tribal laws, tribal relations and the local practice of Islam.

Our mapping is not just simple mapping that says tribe X is here and tribe Y is there. Through interviews/dialogue and surveys we establish the individual/group relationships and dynamics within the families of a tribe, its structures, culture and traditions. Then we map out its relationships with surrounding tribes and tribes they interrelate with. Families and tribes always have a home village and everything radiates out from there in a web over the centuries, we map this family development and spread. Often relations between tribes are dictated by marriage, very old events and religious beliefs (not in the western norm of definition). Who are the family elders, who are the chiefs? How is authority decided? Who wields authority in what areas? This is part of the picture we paint.We developed this methodology in response to the needs of commanders and embassy personal to immediately know and understand the changing nature of field conditions in conflict/unstable politically marginal and threatened states.Traditional academic studies take too long to be effectively responsive in the time frame of rapid social political upheaval. Traditional survey methods are too shallow and inaccurate to reflect the true dynamics of the social political flux. In response to this, over the last ten years we have developed a methodology that blends random selection with targeted selection. Before implementing our Geneagraphic mapping ©, your key and prime people have to have time living among the population to understand the traditions and culture prior to research and you have to be in country recruiting, vetting and training local people to western accepted research methodology. Reactivated field research teams in Kabul and Kandahar comprised of networks of Afghans. We also developed and trained these field research teams using methods similar to those proven successful in Iraq. These teams conducted interviews throughout Afghanistan, particularly in the Pashtu tribal areas. We lived among the population.Objective of the research was to determine the role of Islam and the Mullahs in Afghan society and who the authority figures are, how do they gain authority and maintain it. During our time in Mali, We conducted research throughout the country, including the Touareg inhabited areas (the current rebel AQIM, Boko Harem and Ansura areas of operations). We have traveled extensively through the country from Bamako to Timbuktu to Gao and down to Meneka. The teams stretch from Niger through Mali to Mauritania and the other surrounding countries on Mali borders, areas known to be used by Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).Responsibilities, recruitment and training of field teams, designing research platform, designing security for researchers, creating field operations budget, purchasing and procurement, procuring housing/office space and coordination with DOD and state department.

Guinea Coup, I entered Guinea the day after the coup from Ganta, Liberia and traveled for over a week in African taxi’s and buses traveling north, west then east back to Mali, to observe populations reaction to coup. Entering Guinea was difficult as my friend the Col. at the Ganta border told me “during this period of difficulty we want no foreigners and especially Americans in the country”. I finally negotiated a 15 day Travel Visa for me and I was able to view and assess the situation.

Detached from my work in Mali I traveled to Goma, Congo through Rwanda during hostilities in Goma to observe and access the situation. I was able to access the rebel crossing points north of Goma.

I lived in the refugee camp and interviewed former Liberian rebel fighters for several months assessing their current disposition, views, goals after the conflict.

I did an extensive report on the rebels in the Delta (the MEND) as to form, structure, beliefs, messaging, and goals.

Interviewed Union leaders, activist and military to ascertain probable outcome of president stepping down or death in office, my assessment was a military coup was almost certain to result.

Did background checks on individuals and assessments of old rebels and opposition to elected Government

In Afghanistan in 2006 and 2007, I recruited field research teams comprised of networks of Afghans. I also developed and trained these field research teams using methods similar to those proven successful in Iraq. Although these teams were never deployed, the basic structure of this network remained in place and were reactivated in 2010. These teams were capable of conducting interviews throughout Afghanistan, particularly in the Pashtu tribal areas. I also developed the basis for a set of research teams in Pakistan which can be activated and trained to conduct research there at any time.

InvestigationsI developed a network of investigators in Iraq to investigate Iraqi death claims for AIG. We did excellent work in settling some where there was doubt as to death and work was completed with good speed using local investigators. We expanded with other insurance companies and carried out investigations in Malawi (a rape case), Jordan (a shooting case) and Business due diligence in Vietnam.The lady in this picture faked her kidnapping, we tracked her from outside Baghdad to Mosul where she was staying to split the ransom money, and the Germans arrested her after our report.

As a field research manager I developed field research teams and human networks in the most challenging places in Iraq, including Haditha, Ramadi, Fallujah, Baqubah, Baladrooz, Basra, Sadr City, Ur, Shula, Dora, Ameriya, Jihad, Ademiya, Ghaziliya and Mosul.. I identified recruited and trained researchers in these places and throughout Iraq in 2004, 2005 and 2006. These teams were trained to do formal surveys, structured interviews, informal interviews and participant observation; and they were able to conduct these under the most violent and unstable conditions. I recruited, trained and managed these teams within Iraqi owned and operated companies. I emphasize the importance of recruiting researchers who are from well-respected groups in the local social structure so that they can gain access to any interviewee in the area, gain more accurate information, and avoid endangering themselves. We worked closely with my Iraqi research leads to design security, transportation and communication systems that allowed these local teams to gain access to areas inconspicuously and to leave quickly and safely if trouble arose. Throughout the war in Iraq, I supervised the conduct of tens of thousands of interviews on sensitive questions regarding insurgency, social identity, security, local militias, beliefs regarding Islam and foreign fighters, to name a few; and never lost a researcher despite the high level of instability and insurgent/terrorist activity.Responsibilities, creating field operations budget, purchasing and procurement, designing research platform, designing security for researchers, coordination with DOD or state, procuring housing and office space and in and recruitment of field teams.
