To date, my commercial building career spans 58 years with construction experience across Australia. I have work 12 years in Sydney NSW, 7.5 years in Orange NSW, and 30.5 years in Canberra ACT. I started my career at Kell & Rigby Pty Ltd in 1956 as a pre-apprentice carpenter from the Department of Technical Education, Sydney NSW, with a three year carpentry and joinery indentured apprenticeship. After completing my apprenticeship, I was promoted to leading hand carpenter, followed by further advancement to general foreman, construction supervisor and then to head office as a building estimator. I was then asked to go to Toorah Victoria to run the night shift of a slit form project (12 hour nights) for lift and stair service core to a height of 68 metres. The project ran 24 hrs a day from start to finish. I was approached by head office to move to Orange, NSW as a builders estimator, then again asked to move to Canberra when Kell & Rigby opened a new office in 1972. Within 6 months of being in Canberra I was promoted to Canberra Branch Manager - a position that I held until I retired in 1998. The most rewarding project that I oversaw was the new Parliament House interior fit outs of the House of Reps and Senate Chambers. I also managed six executive suites and administration offices. This work took 3 years (all of the joinery was manufactured by Kell & Rigby in their Strathfield head office Joinery Shop ). During my time as Canberra Branch Manager, the team grew in size from 8 employees to 50. We undertook multiple complex projects across the ACT and extended as far south as the snow fields - Perisher NSW. From 1974 through to 2001, I held an ACT A Class Builders License.The Federal Government also appointed me to join the inaugural council of Reid TAFE, ACT. This is a post that I held for 7 years being both a member and the Chairman of the resource planning committee of Reid Campus.
