I trained as an architect, and have spent most of my career working as a journalist specializing in architecture, building technology, and urban design. In retirement I have pursued my passions as a painter, machinist, woodworker, and maker of all kinds of things. After retiring in 2018 I completed a certificate in Advanced Manufacturing Technology at Washburn Tech in Topeka. This comprehensive program covers electrical motor controls, industrial wiring, hydraulics, pneumatics, programmable logic controls and robotics. Between 2012 and 2018 I was in charge of public outreach and communications for the University of Kansas' School of Architecture, Design & Planning. This work includes all public relations and marketing for the school: press releases, social media, publications, graphic design, photography, and maintaining the school's web presence.A book on advanced building facades I coauthored with Russell Fortmeyer, Kinetic Architecture: Designs for Active Envelopes, was published by Images Publishing in January of 2014. I've written and edited countless stories for the most prestigious magazines in the fields of architecture, design, and construction.During my tenure at Architectural Record I wrote about nearly every subject that had anything to do with buildings or the architecture profession. I specialized in architectural practice, lighting, architectural technology, and building design. I started several magazines related to Record, including GreenSource, the first magazine on sustainable buildings, which was provided to U.S. Green Building Council members, and SNAP, an architectural products tabloid. My essays on design and politics opened many issues of GreenSource magazine and helped establish its credibility as an authoritative source of information in the field of sustainability journalism.Early in my career I started Architectural Lighting magazine, the first magazine about lighting design whose audience focus directed toward architects and lighting designers
