Software development using Ubuntu Linux

Following the acquisition of the Barcrest group by SG Gaming the decision was taken to concentrate on Video machines. I accepted a transfer to the games development where I have completed the conversion of several machines and also the development of new games.

Following a restructure, I moved to a more technical role developing software in primarily in embedded C, to support the libraries for the UK market. As part of this role I supported the UK development team through several triennials, and various hardware upgrades most noticeable being the upgrade of the main platform from MPU5 to MPU6. I also completed the introduction of serial coin handling for Barcrest machines and subsequently enhancing this coin handling too support additional features such as DES encryption and note payout. The result was Barcrest machines could support within the same software/hardware all commonly used serial devices for coin handling. A significant advantage over our competitors.Additional functionality was also developed to support the networking of these gaming machines, and the introduction of 'smart' payout devices that could handle multiple coin values and/or denominations. These developments were curtailed prior to their market introduction however.

Responsible for the support of Library software and hardware. This was composed of any software and/or hardware required for a Gaming machine that was not considered part of the game.

I joined a development team on a strategic development to add an SDH interface to the System X switch, taking over as the Team Leader of the software development in October 1998.Later, the department moved to a matrix management structure. I retained both personnel and technical responsibilities (although now with different groups of people) taking over different responsibilities (including responsibility for the Marconi Billing System in November 2001) as tasks were completed

I transferred to a new department set up to develop customer specific signalling changes. Although this project was cancelled in early 1996, my team went on to implement the changes for the Sparse Decode development. A major development, these changes were necessary to enable customers to retain their existing telephone number when switching between operators.

I was invited to take responsibility for forming a new development team to transfer (from Poole) and subsequently support the Call Accounting Subsystem on the main exchange. A high profile development, the work was completed to the original timescales.

I took over responsibility for the software team developing the AV-MUX using embedded C.Later, once the AV-MUX development was complete, I became involved in the ISDN line card development with responsibility for the test software, test environment and associated testing team.

Software engineer developing software using HP BASIC to control test equipment using IEEE and RS232 interfaces, and later 'C' for the development of embedded software for a telecommunications multiplexer (AV-MUX).

Investigated the use of Expert Systems for fault diagnosis of electronic circuit boards, and assessed the thermal performance of electronic circuits.

Developed and prototyped radar systems by- Design, development and testing of analogue circuits.- Evaluation of microwave sources, and their associated modulators.- Modelling the video processing aspects of radar systems.
