About Charles Uhlmann, Phd
The climate and biodiversity crises are the most serious challenges humanity has ever faced. We've poisoned our waters, foods and landscapes, and drove countless species to extinction. As Terrence McKenna once said "If we could *feel* what we are doing to the Earth we would stop immediately." I agree and I'm very positive we can become more responsible caretakers of Earth, as we would with a garden — which is perhaps why we're here.My background is a mix of ecology and molecular genetics. I studied phylogenetics, paleontology, evolution, as well as plant, algal and fungal biology with taxonomy, in situ sampling trips and dissections. Then, I changed scale to understand how genes and cellular processes rule over plant physiology. I fell in love with the molecular underpinnings of plant-microbe interactions (especially mycorrhizal symbioses) and "omic" techniques. During my PhD, I used genetics, microscopy, phenotyping, transcriptomics and metabolomics to investigate the stability of root comensal traits in community contexts and how plants modulate their root immune responses to fungal endophytes when under nutrient stress. As Humify's first biologist, I am setting up a microbiology lab. Using microbial functions, I explore how to modulate humus properties and formulations to adapt it to diverse environmental applications.Away from the desk/bench, you can find me rock climbing, gardening or cooking.

Scoping deep tech whitespaces in biology and agriculture for maximum positive impact on the climate.
Doctoral Candidate
-Formulated my own research question at the intersection of evolution, genetics, plant immunity and physiology-Designed, executed and analyzed experiments employing relevant mutants and nutrient (notably Phosphate) conditions, microscopy, phenotyping, transcriptomics and metabolomics to answer question-Presented my results at internationnal conferences and.
Contractor
-Visited farms to assess grassland surfaces suitability for grazing animals in the context of the Common Agricultural Policy
Intern
-Study of symbiotic gene expression in 3 different groups of plants, liverworts, ferns and flowering plants-Stable transformation of Marchantia paleacea and Pteris vittata + Medicago truncatula root-RNA isolation to contribute Pteris vittata's transcriptome to the 10KP project
Intern
-Optimization of both RNA isolation and genetic transformation in the fern Pteris vittata with the overarching ambition to develop this plant as a model to study Arbuscular Mycorrhizal symbiosis.
