I received a Ph.D. in Gene Biotechnology at Brock University, with a robust biochemistry and molecular biology background. My Ph.D. research topic focused on Plant Immunity, and I specifically focused on the TGA transcription factor family, which is involved in basal immunity and systemic acquired resistance. I would use molecular biology techniques like, but not limited to, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, recombinant protein expression, protein purification, electrophoretic mobility shift assay, and protein characterization methods to study mutant and wild-type TGA family member proteins. It was with great honour that I also received the opportunity to participate in collaborations at Université de Technologie de Compiègn in France. Here, I assisted in the primary development of peptide-aptamers and in developing a protein-DNA 3D model that had not previously been crystallized. During my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry, I completed co-op stints at Sanofi Pasteur (2015) and AAFC (2014), focusing on bulk inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) production and Plumb-pox virus (PPV) monitoring, respectively. At Sanofi Pasteur, I maintained consumable flow within the IPV production facility, accurately kept the inventory of samples and completed IPV products, and meticulously performed and trained new and existing co-workers in environmental monitoring sampling of facility water, air bioburden, particulates, and medical gasses. At AAFC, I assisted an entomologist and virologist on aphid vector research. Harvesting virus-free aphids for in-lab infection studies or monitoring PPV infection within peach varietals provided necessary information about PPV infection and possible age-related susceptibility. Overall, I identify myself as a fixer and mentor. I enjoy solving puzzles, finding solutions, optimizing processes for better reproducibility, and passing off my knowledge. My love for proteins focuses on my desire to continue to work in molecular biology roles, develop quality control measures, or manage biologics production. Finally, I am passionate about horticulture, hot pepper cultivation, and electronic/computer repair.
