Profile bio

About Charles Acheson, Ph.D.

As an educator with ten years of experience, I believe that a creative mindset is the most important element of building successful learning experiences. From considering new methodologies for developing learning opportunities to generating memorable media to express information, a creative approach to learning design offers learners unique experiences that stick with them after the course. In short, when crafting learning materials, uniqueness is critical.I came to this understanding while developing and teaching composition, rhetoric, literature, and new media courses at the University of Florida. Every course I created included at least one project that challenged students to learn experientially through making their own media. In turn, through this critical-making approach, students routinely expressed a greater understanding of course materials than through traditional teaching methods. One example, a self-designed project, “Critical Mashing,” stands out. For the project, students mashed together two comics from the course reading list—taking the setting of one comic and placing the characters from another text into that setting while illustrating a short, five-page mash up comic. From this exercise, students approached the themes and issues of each text through the lens of the other, encouraging them to discover new understandings of both texts. When mashing Jack Kirby’s The Amazing Spider-Man with Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira, one student noted they realized that the radiation in The Amazing Spider-Man served as an allegory for the uncertainty of adolescence.Beyond designing unique learning experiences, I employ my artistic mindset and abilities in the learning materials as well. For example, when creating “Don’t Panic! A New Player’s Guide to the Infield Fly Rule” using Storyline 360, I incorporated boiling line animation when illustrating the main character who guides learners through the module. The animation and design of the character provide a fun atmosphere for learners to better understand one of baseball/softball’s most esoteric rules. Learners balk when they come across learning opportunities that repurpose previously used graphics and stock images, so using creativity in course design is important for learners to engage with the material.I'm always looking to grow my personal and professional network.
