  • Valqari
    Chief Technology Officer
    Valqari Feb 2021 - Present
    Lombard, Illinois, Us
As CTO of Valqari, I am responsible for the technical vision and innovations for our line of drone package delivery landing stations. These systems use advanced robotic technologies to dock drones, move packages to and from them, and secure packages in automated lockers. I work closely with customers, marketing, and engineering teams to merge the possibilities of technology with customer needs. I also am responsible for Valqari's patent program.
  • Industry Iot Consortium
    Chief Technical Officer
Industry Iot Consortium Dec 2018 - Present
    Global, Us
As Associate Chief Technology officer of the Industry IoT Consortium (formerly the Industrial Internet Consortium), I am responsible for setting the Consortium's technical strategy, and executing our workplan of defining the architecture for Digital Transformation and IoT. I have special focus on edge computing - which takes the computation, networking and storage capabilities of the cloud deep into IoT networks. I also served as CTO of the OpenFog Consortium, which joined forces with the Industrial Internet Consortium in early 2019
  • Cisco
    Principal Engineer And System Architect
    Cisco Oct 2016 - Dec 2018
I was responsible for IoT architectures and standards related to Cisco's fog computing / edge computing offers. I analyzed IoT use cases, maped their requirements onto architectures, worked with product developers to implement them, and customers to deploy them. I was also Cisco's primary technical representative on the OpenFog Consortium (one of the most influential groups in the definition and implementation of fog computing and edge computing), holding two chair positions in the OpenFog Consortium: chair of the Technical Committee (in a capacity similar to a CTO), and chair of the Architecture Working Group. • Leading technical efforts across the OpenFog Consortium to refine and expand the OpenFog Reference Architecture• Defining key use cases for fog / edge computing in IoT networks, including detailed work on smart cities / buildings / homes, smart grids, robots, smart factories, autonomous vehicles and drones.• Working to understand what interoperability means in fog nodes and fog networks, and how fog interoperates with edge and cloud computing• Generating detailed requirements lists for fog computing, by extracting requirements from customer use cases and technical experts.• Driving liaison roles between the OpenFog Consortium and related standards efforts including IEEE / ETSI MEC / IIC• Working to understand how fog / edge can be secured, including refining requirements for hardware roots of trust, trusted platform modules, and the use of BlockChain on fog / IoT networks• Working with Cisco’s customers, sales, marketing and engineering teams to refine our IoT / fog offer, and discover new applications across all IoT verticals and customer use cases• Working with Cisco’s suppliers of fog / edge components to insure an optimal supply chain• Producing multiple publications and presentations relating to fog / IoT
  • Cisco Systems
Technical Leader Ii / System Architect
    Cisco Systems Apr 2008 - Oct 2016
    San Jose, Ca, Us
Responsible for media processing and analytics platform architecture, especially the highly innovative HW architecture and design for the MXE 5600 - a high performance video transcoding, and storage platform. I also worked with several Cisco research projects in areas like Fog Computing, router service nodes, and H.265; led divisional Intellectual Property, patent review and coordination efforts, and represented Cisco on several standards bodies.• Set direction for a standards-based platform based approach that saved over $1 million in development expense and at least 12 months of development effort• Created an innovative hardware partitioning and modularity that resulted in a highly efficient media processing systems, upgradable for 10-year field life. Our systems led the world in density, power efficiency and feature richness.• Collaborated with other business units to facilitate platforms, commonality, reuse, and leverage of HW and SW elements across product lines. Chaired an influential internal study on video processing that helped resolve redundancies and bring customer focus to product lines.• Developed heterogeneous processor architectures and innovative algorithm partitioning for multicore CPUs that promises to nearly double the density and performance, and provide a 50% cost reduction for speech recognition and analytics products. • Completed several rounds of CPU performance studies for video CoDec, signaling, and analytics algorithms. Recommended HW architectures and SW partitioning that helped optimize system performance and efficiency. • Worked with supply base and supply chain professionals at the chip, board, and system level to ensure most current technology is used. Advanced needs were represented in the roadmaps of companies like Intel, Broadcom, Xilinx, TI, and Freescale as a result. • Served on five subcommittees in the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturer’s Group (the leading standards body for modular platform hardware).
  • At&T / Lucent Technologies / Alcatel-Lucent
    Bell Labs Fellow
    At&T / Lucent Technologies / Alcatel-Lucent 1986 - 2008
I led a company-wide effort to evolve a significant portion of product portfolio to standard modular platforms like AdvancedTCA and SAF. I performed partitioning studies, capacity, performance and reliability modeling, and detailed analysis of total lifecycle cost of ownership. While at Lucent, I provided many of the high-level requirements for high performance modular platforms that drove the AdvancedTCA standard.• Pioneered AdvancedTCA as the basis of a standards-based product portfolio. Employed it as a common platform for wireless network offers, widely deployed at most of the world’s leading wireless carriers.• Drove the direction of Fortune-100 suppliers’ roadmaps for modular platforms, COTS elements, and related products. Many of these insights directly influenced the AdvancedTCA market• Led a unification of a common packet processing strategy across all business units, saving dozens of person years of HW and SW development effort• Actively participated in all phases of specification development as an acknowledged expert in AdvancedTCA, which was approximately $2 billion / year ecosystem in 2012.• Invented the concept of VoIP service nodes, today known as the Media Resource Function (MRF) in mobile networks, which provide functions like ringtones, signaling and media processing. Majority of wireless calls use these network elements.• Led efforts to migrate from circuit switched to VoIP networks. Coordinated the production of several influential studies and position papers that defined corporate VoIP strategy (and highly influenced customer strategies), accelerating deployment worldwide, and paving the way for services like Skype• Conceived of the architecture that became highly successful Anymedia product line; a system that was a market leader in density and availability• Designed one of the world’s first wideband network processor chips for an early packet voice system
