About Charles W. Calhoun
“Failure is not the end. It is a necessary part of the path.” - Jedi Eno Cordova“Don’t just teach someone to fish, give them the equipment they need to do it well and the time and a place to make it all happen.” - someone smarter than I'm an experienced fundraiser, grants manager, and program coordinator striving toward equity and inclusion in my work and in my life. Originally from northeast Kentucky, I hold degrees from the University of Kentucky and Ohio State and have worked domestically and internationally in music performance and production, informal education, historic preservation, grant administration, and community development. I’m always interested to learn more about ways to make communities and systems work equitably and will never pass up an opportunity to unlearn what I have learned, especially about US History and religion.I'm an avid reader of theology publications, science fiction novels, and social justice critiques, and the podcasts that grow from them or help me understand them more clearly. Outside of work, you'll find me fishing, training for Tang Soo Do martial arts, sitting on action committees, playing with my rescue pups, binge watching the newest Star Wars show or rewatching LOTR, practicing frugality by doing my own car and house repairs, tending my flower gardens, or listening to the latest Taylor Swift, John Williams, or Tyler Childers records.
Listed skills include Event Planning, Arts Administration, Performing Arts, Marketing, and 12 others.

Instructor of Record - Writing Art Criticism AE 2367This is a course in critical thinking and writing about contemporary art. We may review some art from the late 19th and early 20th century, but will focus most of our attention on art created from the 1950s to the present, in various forms and styles. We define what art is, what its role in society is, and what gives us permission to criticize it.We will define what constitutes art criticism and how to write art criticism. We explore a variety of theoretical approaches to art criticism, identify how such theories have influenced artists and art criticism, and practice applying these theoretical lenses in our own critiques. In preparation for personal writing about art, we will critically analyze writings by professional critics with divergent and conflicting points of view. You will develop your critical thinking and writing skills by working through this course. Critical thinking hinges on relational learning. This course will be broken down into three sections: MethodologyFramework Theory. These three components of art criticism, and research in general, will give you the necessary tools to critically approach and discuss art.
