Specialist Advisor for the UK House of Lords Online Safety Bill Joint Committee, chaired by Damian Collins MP. Contributed significantly to research, formulation and writing of the Committee’s report to the UK Government, which will come to vote in 2022.This is one of the first attempts to legislate the online world in the context of the civil society. Particular attention was given to the balance between insulating the public from radicalising online disinformation, and protecting press freedoms and access to information.Regularly briefed MPs and Peers, as well as liaised with C-Suite corporate executives and leading academics. Key witnesses included Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, the UK Secretary of State, and executives from Facebook, Google, TikTok and Twitter.Key contributions included advocating for vulnerable audiences at risk of radicalisation; lobbying for prioritising the legislation of addictive design tropes over the regulation of content; creating definitions around disinformation and vulnerability; petitioning for the inclusion of swift carceral sentencing for violating executives; and the inclusion of the games industry within the scope of legislation.

The StratCom Terminology Working Group creates working definitions and terminology for NATO, and I served as the expert in digital influence operations and digital warfare. Far from an abstract exercise, defining terminology has profound impacts on the budgets and boundaries of NATO defence realms. Liaised regularly with NATO personnel and academic leaders, working across London and Riga.
