About Charles Laughlin

My background is academic, with a PhD in Chinese literature and ten years teaching experience at an Ivy League university. Over time, though, I have been increasingly involved in academic administration, particularly study abroad and related scholarship programs. This culminated in a fulfilling 2 1/2 years as a full-time field director of a premier language training program in Beijing. Now back in academe at the University of Virginia, I want to bring these two aspects of my career together by promoting communication between scholars, the media, and other professionals interested in or involved with China. The goal is to highlight the importance and relevance of academic scholarship to relations between China and the rest of the world, particularly the US.Specialties: University-level teaching, academic research in the study of Chinese culture, academic administration, study abroad program design and management.
