I started as an entry level programmer when the company was formerly named Volunteer Natural Gas. We worked and programmed Burroughs billing machines and mainframes. I learned utility billing and accounting, even working as a desk clerk at different locations taking payments from customers. I learned a lot about natural gas utility operation and regulations. One of my favorite accomplishments was automating a long manual spreadsheet called the unbilled revenue calculation. Another favorite was expanding a networking program to provide publishing capabilities of the dot-matrix printers with nroff-like control commands.
