Board Member And Co-Founder
Provide my feedback on the performance, focus, and strategic directions of the company, concentrating largely on the product features, roadmap, and technical implementation.
Chief Technical Officer
Lead the technical development of the company’s services and products, using agile software development processes with the 8-person team to ensure that the company met the functional and quality requirements of our customers, like the European Space Agency and Schréder Lighting. Followed innovations within the field and incorporated those innovations where appropriate (e.g. functional programming and containers). Developed training material and demonstrations for SixSq products.Managed our involvement in EU-funded projects to ensure alignment between those projects and our product roadmaps. Usually, two or three projects ran in parallel with budgets around 500 k€ for SixSq.
Co-Founder
Founded SixSq Sàrl along with two other partners to create an automated testing and cloud application management platform. Provided consulting through the company concerning automated testing, software integration, grid technologies, and cloud technologies. Contributed to the company's SlipStream (cloud brokerage) and NuvlaBox (edge computing) products through architectural design and coding. As a partner, helped define the strategic direction and goals of the company.
Research Engineer
Coordinated the StratusLab project that created one of the first complete open source software distributions for private clouds. Responsible for all administrative and financial aspects of the project, serving as the liaison between the partners and the European Commission. Made significant contributions to the design and development of the StratusLab data and appliance management services. Represented the collaboration at numerous international conferences.Managed the user communities that participated in the European flagship grid projects: EGEE-II and EGEE-III, with a combined budget of 100M€. Leading this activity required organizing and interacting with more than 350 people that participated in this activity, covering 7 different scientific disciplines, including High-Energy Physics (CERN) and astrophysics (European Space Agency). Frequently presented the projects' goals, software, and results at international conferences.Initiated a series of Quattor workshops to allow the developers to discuss their contributions and to guide the evolution of the toolkit. The enduring community that maintains the toolkit was born from these workshops. Completely rewrote Quattor's pan language compiler using multi-threaded Java to resolve performance and usability issues with the toolkit.
Research Engineer
Coordinated the Project Technical Forum for the EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-sciencE) project, the flagship European project for grid middleware. This group analyzed the services provided by the project’s work packages, validated their interfaces, and resolved incompatibilities when they arose. It also compared user requirements from the scientific communities involved in the project to delivered features, recommending changes where appropriate. For the Linear Accelerator Laboratory (LAL), I hardened and improved the Quattor toolkit (a result from the previous European DataGrid project) for the automated installation of the EGEE grid services within LAL's data center.
Research Engineer
Lead the Integration Team (10 people) for the European DataGrid project, co-funded by the European Commission. This team integrated the grid middleware produced by the project, resolved conflicts between the various subsystems, and operated the project’s testbed that included 20 sites throughout Europe. At the time, this was the largest grid deployment in the world.
Postdoc
Developed a Java-based analysis and visualization toolkit for neurobiology data. To allow visualizations to be published, I wrote a graphics subsystem that produces high-quality vector graphics. This subsystem was open-sourced and contributed the FreeHEP library.
Postdoc
Developed a system for generating and managing the simulated data needed for the Higgs boson search for the ALEPH experiment at LEP (Large Electron-Positron Collider) across all available data centers. Initiated and published (Physics Letters B) the first measurement of the cross-section for Z boson pairs for the ALEPH collaboration.
Postdoc
Developed and implemented a real time subsystem to identify and store events containing tau leptons at the CDF experiment Fermilab's Tevatron collider. The innovative use of hardware accelerated neural networks was critical for the subsystem's performance. The subsystem required the assembly of custom electronics, development of software for the embedded processors, and integration with the full data acquisition system. Lead a search for a charged Higgs boson and published the results in Physical Review Letters.
Postdoc
Published (Physical Review Letters) the results of my doctoral quark-gluon plasma search from the E735 experiment at Fermilab's Tevatron collider. Worked on detector alignment strategies for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC).
