    My role began as a front-end developer with some Perl scripting, but what I quickly evolved into doing was working directly with the editorial leadership of WSJ.com to develop content for online and the publishing systems that would support the content. I sat with the editors and worked daily with them to find ways to ease their workload by eliminating and simplifying the tasks associated with publishing so that we could all concentrate on creating better content. After a year my role had evolved to where I was spending the majority of my time planning about how to best present content online (publishing print content online was a different and new thing then). Eventually I was made the manager of the “Interface Development” department which at its peak numbered 13 developers working on interactive features and the publishing systems for them.Through working closely with the editorial team, I learned a few ways of working with them that differed from other business partner relationships:• Learn the editorial rhythms and respect their deadlines. Deadlines are incredibly serious and the news cycle needs to be baked into everything.• Editors and reports know contents, lots of content, but not always how best to present it. Bring the user experience to them and show them alternative ways to present online. There are limitations and advantages to online content that they will not know.• Eliminate the burden of publication – make life easy on the editorial team. Every minute they spend thinking about making the system publish the way it should is a minute lost from the already tight news cycle.FYI - My initial project was to create a process that would daily publish all options data online, allowing the print journal to cease printing the entire table. This saved them about $1.5mil per year (the cost of printing and wasted ad space).
