Barjeel Art Foundation is an independent, UAE-based initiative established to manage, preserve and exhibit an extensive collection of Modern and Contemporary Arab Art. The foundation’s guiding principle is to contribute to the intellectual development of the art scene in the Arab region by building a prominent, publicly accessible art collection in the UAE. Part of this objective involves developing a public platform to foster critical dialogue around contemporary art practices with a focus on artists with Arab heritage internationally. The foundation strives to create an open-ended enquiry that responds to and conveys the nuances inherent to Arab histories beyond borders of culture and geography. By hosting in-house exhibitions, lending artwork to international forums, producing print and online publications, and fashioning interactive public programmes, the foundation strives to serve as an informative resource for contemporary art by Arab artists both locally and on the global stage. In addition to building an informative database of artists, the foundation is seeking to develop an educational programme that both understands and involves the local community. By establishing partnerships with arts and cultural institutions internationally, the foundation looks to create opportunities to encourage public awareness of the importance of art to the community.

Established by Albert Skira in 1928, and originally based in Geneva and Paris, Skira is now one of the world’s oldest and finest international art publishers. Today, Skira’s headquarters are in Milan with affiliated companies in Paris and Rome. Skira offers a multilingual publishing programme or, rather, distinct publishing programmes, corresponding to equally distinct geographic and linguistic areas of intervention. Books in Italian are more numerous, and include, among others, catalogues for major exhibitions in Italy, and are distributed in bookshops by Messaggerie Libri, with promotions entrusted to PDE. The line in English is second in importance: the distribution is entrusted to ArtBook DAP in US and Thames & Hudson for the rest of the world. Books in French, fundamental for what is Skira’s past, are distributed by Flammarion. Today, Skira is probably the most important publisher of catalogues for major events around the globe, with at least 250 titles each year. But the company is also the most important player in Italy regarding the conception and production of exhibitions.

Initiated by Charles Pocock in 1999, The Al Noor Library, housed at Meem Gallery, is regarded as the most comprehensive resource centre for the study of Middle Eastern arts in the region. Comprised of an extensive collection of over 20,000 books, journals, rare volumes and auction catalogues relating to ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art, architecture and archaeology, as well as an expanding digital archive holding over 150,000 images connected to the subject, the library attracts visiting researchers and scholars in the field from all over the world.The Al Noor Institute of Middle Eastern Art (NIMEA), established in 2008 is an outgrowth of the Al Noor Library and Meem Gallery. The institute’s mission is to encourage public appreciation of modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art, and to preserve the legacy of the region’s material culture through the archiving, creation and collection of important resources and research material, often in collaboration with leading artists, art historians, museums and academic institutions.A non-profit institute, NIMEA aims to enhance the study and research of the arts of the region through Meem Editions, the respected in-house publishing programme of Meem Gallery. Notable publications include the Meem Editions monographs, Dia Al-Azzawi: Retrospective and Tanavoli: Monograph as well as books on artists Kamal Boullata, Ibrahim Salahi, Abbas Kiarostami and Marwan and collected essays in Meem Projects 2012 and Meem Projects 2013.NIMEA has worked with leading cultural bodies and foundations around the region including Mathaf (The Arab Museum of Modern Art), Doha, on its Mathaf Encyclopedia of Modern Art and the Arab World, The Haus der Kunst, Munich; The Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah; The Guggenheim, Abu Dhabi; The Louvre, Abu Dhabi and The Whitechapel Gallery, London.

Meem Gallery is a leading international presence in the management and promotion of modern and contemporary Arab, North African and Iranian art. Founded in 2005 by Sultan Sooud Al-Qassemi, Mishal Hamed Kanoo and Charles Pocock, the gallery deals with primary and secondary market sales. Running an ambitious programme of solo and group exhibitions with a special focus on regional Modern Masters, including Dia Azzawi, Kamal Boullata and Parviz Tanavoli, Meem Gallery also exhibits the work of innovative contemporary artists such as Adel Abidin, Zhivago Duncan and Mahmoud Obaidi. Works by represented artists can be found in the collections of international museums and institutions such as British Museum, London; Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, UAE; Centre Pompidou and Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris; LACMA, Los Angeles; Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; MoMA, New York; Tate Modern, London and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. In addition to its extensive exhibition schedule, Meem Gallery oversees Meem Editions, a respected in-house publishing programme that regularly commissions work by many of the most well regarded scholars, academics and writers in the field. The Noor Library for Middle Eastern Art, housed at the gallery, is recognised as one of the largest and most comprehensive resource centres for the arts of the region. To date, the library houses a collection of over 20,000 books, journals and auction catalogues relating to modern, contemporary, classical and ancient Middle Eastern art.
