As the head of The GroundTruth Project, I am building a non-profit news organization that supports a new generation of journalists to tell the stories that matter in under-coverered corners of the world including the United States. Based at the flagship PBS station WGBH in Boston, GroundTruth's mission is to provide training, mentoring and resources to emerging journalists to do work that seeks to make a difference, and to do it safely. We sponsor approximately 30 reporting fellowships a year through support from the Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Luce Foundation, Kaiser Foundation as well as individual and family support. We build reporting teams around the world that produce in-depth and investigative work that focuses on social justice issues, such as human rights, emerging democracies, religious freedom, global health, the environment, freedom of expression and rising income inequality. This award-winning reporting is featured as 'Special Reports' on GlobalPost and through other editorial partnerships with WGBH, PRI The World, PBS FRONTLINE, PBS NewsHour, NBC News, Huffington Post and others. In 2016, we started GroundTruth Films with filmmaker Beth Murphy as our director. GroundTruth has garnered many awards for its work, including the Alfred I. duPont Award , the national Edward R. Murrow Award and the Overseas Press Club award for international reporting on television.

GlobalPost was folded into Public Radio International in the summer of 2015 and is now based at WGBH in Boston, where The GroundTruth Project first set up its operations in 2014. Good to have both GlobalPost and GroundTruth under one roof. As co-founder of GlobalPost, I built the editorial team and then headed up our successful initiative for foundation-supported GlobalPost Special Reports, investigative reporting, training programs and workshops through what a companion, non-profit arm that we called The GroundTruth Project. The funding for GroundTruth came from a variety of sources including The Ford Foundation for reporting on human rights, The Henry Luce Foundation for reporting on religion, the Kaiser Family Foundation for reporting on global health and other foundations. The Bake Family Trust also provides a cornerstone grant for The GroundTruth Project and specifically funds reporting for my blog, GroundTruth. Through The GroundTruth Project, we expanded our mission to train the next generation of international reporters in the digital age through a series of more than 25 reporting fellowships and several ambitious workshops and programs that include working directly in the field with top, young reporters, such as our partnership with the Open Hands Initiative in Burma this year and Egypt two years ago. After five years as Co-founder, Vice President and Executive Editor of GlobalPost, creating The GroundTruth Project and growing our foundation support was a great chance to broaden the mission of our journalism and to do more work myself in the field.

GlobalPost is America's first web-based international news organization. We are based in Boston and have 70 correspondents in 50 countries around the world filing news stories to the site and a staff of about 20 people at our headquarters in Boston. As Co-founder and Executive Editor, I built the editorial team, codified standards and practices in our field guide, forged important editorial partnerships, oversaw the design and build of the website and all other aspects of getting a start-up news organization off the ground. The editorial team we put together is pretty amazing and went on to win numerous editorial awards, including the Overseas Press Club award for coverage of the Arab Spring, Polk and Peabody awards for coverage of the Middle East, back-to-back Edward R. Murrow Awards, the RFK Award for human rights reporting and more. From 2013 to 2014, I was Vice President and Editor-at-Large focused on building the foundation-supported initiative at GlobalPost to sustain in-depth and investigative reporting. That initiative became The GroundTruth Project, an independent, non-profit organization recognized by the IRS as a 501c3, and is now based at WGBH in Boston.
