My mission at Security Lancaster is to provide practical help to the 300,000 software developers in the UK (and the many more overseas) to improve their software security. Based on rigorous research canvassing a wide range of industry experts, we have developed a package of workshops, Developer Essentials, that is both remarkable effective at improving a development team's delivery of software security, and inexpensive for all concerned. So far, this package has empowered over 100 software developers in 11 commercial, charitable and government organisations to improve the security of their developed software. For 5 years I spent the majority of my consultancy work with Symbian, helping this phenomenally successful company develop the technical skills needed to deliver the world’s foremost smartphone operating system. We’ve provided training courses to all Symbian’s developers in basic and advanced programming skills; helped introduce agile methods of working; solved cross-platform issues in design and performance, and architected the Ericsson R380, the first smartphone.

I love the challenges and variety of consulting. Object Designers was a consultancy set up to introduce to industry a new way of designing software: object orientation. We have empowered teams in companies ranging from banks to cable manufacturers. Our role is to nudge, introduce ideas, review positively, and occasionally help design. When the project’s done, the team say ‘we did it ourselves’. Though Object Designers closed down in 1995 to allow the founders to take other roles, my consultancy work has continued. Apart from my work with Symbian, my teams provide bank risk management and deal tracking systems. They need mentoring, training courses and occasionally project reviews; I provide that, and the teams deliver.

Reuters is the foremost provider of financial trading information in the world. I work on terminal software, designing and implementing the software that provides the complex displays used by traders in dealing systems worldwide. Much of our work is leading edge: from early Microsoft software (Windows 1 anyone?) to reusing the inexpensive children’s BBC Micro as a financial terminal, or designing efficient ways to download software through 1-way satellite links. Our clients’ need for real-time, fail-safe, software make for a challenging implementation environment. We’ve learned to meet these challenges, and to measure and prove that we have.
