  • Hewlett-Packard Laboratories
Senior Researcher In The Sustainable Ecosystem Research Group (Serg)
    Hewlett-Packard Laboratories Feb 2008 - Mar 2011
    Houston, Texas, Us
Our group works on three things: *- how to measure/compare sustainability, *- how to improve the sustainability of Information Technology (IT) -- 2% of the world's carbon footprint, and *- how to apply IT to improve the other 98%.I am the systems architect and technical transfer lead for our group. I work with other electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, control theory experts, computer scientists (esp. machine learning experts), and an economist. The bulk of our work on improving IT sustainability is focused on data centers. The work aims to provide IT services at a defined quality (SLA) with the least energy, least materials and least cost possible. For our data center work, I have developed a sophistiated data model of the data center facilities, IT, and services; and a high-performance messaging architecture that allow us to bring in sensor data from a variety of these systems. The data is related in real-time to the model. Most of our work is built upon this architecture. We leverage the model and the model-referenced data to do active control of cooling, IT and services. The architecture also supports rich user interfaces for historical reporting and live dash boarding.I manage several large-scale demonstrators of our work in production data centers. In addition to the above, I am a member of team standing up a new worldwide business for energy and sustainability for HP.
  • Hewlett-Packard Laboratories
Senior Researcher (Engineer/Scientist) In The Storage Systems Department
    Hewlett-Packard Laboratories Mar 2006 - Feb 2008
    Houston, Texas, Us
I was a member of the Storage Systems Department within HP Laboratories.I worked on the long-term preservation of digital assets.I wrote a book on storage systems (available at http://www.amazon.com/Storage-data-information-systems-Wilkes/dp/1424317312).I implemented a large-scale, collaborative caching scheme that created a low latency, geographically-dispersed storage network for our customers. This work was done in close cooperation with the awesome folks at Dreamworks Animation.
  • Hewlett-Packard Laboratories
Senior Researcher (Engineer/Scientist) In The Consumer And Applications System Laboratory (Casl)
    Hewlett-Packard Laboratories Feb 2003 - Mar 2006
    Houston, Texas, Us
Senior research working on novel computing and communication devices for consumer applications from the living room in the first world to villages in the third world.Investigated and developed datacasting solutions for analog and digital video.Worked for several years with Berkeley WIreless Research Center (BWRC). Provided system perspective for novel physical layer radio architectures that could be both reactive and low power. Looked at MAC layers that were energy efficient.Experienced with embedded Linux, especially on ARM, including hardware bring-up via JTAG. Contributed code to kernel for the ARM tree and for various device drivers. Wrote the the initial set of patches that eventually became CONFIG_EMBEDDED to pare down the kernel for embedded devices. Contributed to one of the first ARM boot loaders, blob, including board ports, a new NOR flash programming layer and XMODEM downloads.
