Bring Energy Director - Strategy & Decarbonisation. This follows a rich career with over 20 years’ experience in energy and sustainability within the built environment working in consultancy, strategy and delivery roles in the private sector, local government and the civil service.I graduated with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering in 2001 and started my career as a Sustainability Consultant for Faber Maunsell (AECOM). At AECOM I worked on a wide range of research and delivery projects with special interest areas building sustainability, district heating and water efficiency. In 2010 I joined Islington Council and successfully delivered Islington Council’s award winning heat network, Bunhill Heat and Power and developed Islington’s innovative decentralised energy project programme including an innovative project to capture waste what from a London Underground Tube ventilation shaft.In November 2013 I joined the Heat Network Delivery Unit at DECC to help deliver support to local authorities investigating heat network opportunities and developing projects. Working as a critical friend, the support is aimed at helping local authorities take forward heat network projects by helping to focus activities, get best value for external works, assist in the interpretation of technical and commercial implications of a project, and supporting the project team develop structures to deliver and potentially govern heat networks. I continued to do this part time whilst also continuing to work at Islington until 2015 when I joined BEIS full time. Returning to BEIS after maternity leave in 2017, I took on the role as Head of the Heat Network Investment Project. HNIP, a Government Major Project, secured £320m of funding to invest in heat networks projects through grants and loans. The project aims to grow the UK heat networks market to help meet Uk decarbonisation targets. In 2019 I moved into the Heat and Buildings Strategy and Portfolio role working towards developing the strategic approach for decarbonising buildings over the next decade. The team is responsible for drawing together BEIS near term policy and development work across both the Clean Heat and Energy Efficiency & Local directorates to deliver against our strategic objectives. This includes ensuring delivery in the 2020s and work to setting us on a path to decarbonising buildings through the 30s and 40s towards net zero. I joined Bring Energy (formally Equans Urban Energy) in 2021 to lead the policy, innovation and decarbonisation workstreams.

Head Of Heat Strategy And ProgrammeDepartment For Business, Energy And Industrial Strategy (Beis) Jul 2019 - Mar 2021London, England, GbHeating is the single biggest reason we consume energy in our society and is responsible for over a third of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions and in 2019 the UK government set a legally binding-target to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions from across the UK economy by 2050. Meeting our net-zero target will require virtually all heat in buildings to be decarbonised, and heat in industry to be reduced to close to zero carbon emissions and the Clean Growth Strategy (CGS) acknowledged heat as the most difficult decarbonisation challenge facing the country. Changing the UKs heating to low carbon solutions will involve large-scale transformation, including disruption to consumers and wide-ranging change to energy systems and markets. Given the diversity of heat demand, no one solution can provide the best option for everyone - a mix of technologies and customer options will need to be available to decarbonise heat at scale. My new role and head of Heat Strategy and Programme will help bring together all of the good work across the BEIS Clean Heat Directorate and help drive forward a delivery focused Roadmap towards mass low carbon transformation of our heating systems.We are publishing a policy Roadmap next summer which will set out the programme of work required to enable key strategic decisions in the first half of the 2020s on how we achieve mass transition to low carbon heating. Amongst other things, it will consider: the role of markets, the need for policy or regulatory intervention, and increasing wider public awareness of low carbon heating. -
Head Of Heat Networks Investment ProjectDepartment For Business, Energy And Industrial Strategy (Beis) Jan 2018 - Jul 2019London, England, GbThe Heat Networks Investment Project is a Government Major Project which received £320m of capital funding to invest in heat networks projects through grants and loans. My role includes managing the procurement of a delivery partner and the on-going work the Delivery Partner and the BEIS HNIP team will carry out as part of the scheme set up towards planned launch of the scheme in Autumn 2018. This will be followed, once the scheme is in place, by on-going contract management and an intelligent client function ensuring the delivery of on-going scheme support, funding allocation and scheme administration functions.The key objectives of the project is to grow the UK heat networks market and deliver cost effective carbon savings required to meet our future carbon reduction commitments.Heat accounts for around a third of UK carbon emissions and almost half our energy usage. Meeting our legally binding climate change targets will require the complete or near-complete decarbonisation of heat. The Clean Growth Strategy set out the Government’s strong commitment to significantly expanding the heat networks sector. In each of the Strategy’s illustrative pathways to 2050, heat networks are projected to meet 17% of heat demand in homes and up to 24% of heat demand in commercial and public sector buildings.By investing in heat networks the government is shaping this new market in line with our ambitious, modern Industrial Strategy. Heat networks represent a significant opportunity to upgrade part of the UK’s energy infrastructure and seize the opportunity for business that new technology presents. The long term objective of the HNIP is to help create a self-sustaining heat networks market that does not require direct Government subsidy.
