I had many responsibilities within the CPA accredited Molecular Pathology laboratory, such as testing patient samples for disease associations or monitoring their condition, which involves sample preparation, performing PCR, data analysis, result interpretation and reporting according to relevant SOPs. I helped develop a new methodology and the appropriate SOP. I have mastered the intraoperative testing of sentinel lymph nodes for cancer markers indicating breast cancer metastasis, which is highly time critical. I also carried out routine tasks including checking and logging patient samples, maintaining and tracking laboratory stocks, answering laboratory queries whilst adhering to data protection and patient confidentiality. I participated in audits and monthly departmental meetings, where I took minutes, brainstormed ideas, and used feedback to direct my lab work. I took responsibility for my own personal development by maintaining my training portfolio and actively seeking development opportunities, such as taking on University research work.

After having completed my MSc project I was offered the chance to continue with the research.

Lectures, tutorials, seminars, eight weeks of laboratory practicals and a six month research project placement provided me with in depth understanding and training in the theory and practical techniques of molecular pathology and toxicology. I have acquired excellent general laboratory skills and mastered more advanced procedures, whilst achieving consistently high grades during both the taught and research phases.

As the social secretary for the Derby University Computing Society, it was my responsibility to welcome newcomers and make them feel at ease in their new environment. I organised social events, to help new students make friends with those of similar interests, as well as arranging successful charity events. I attended student council meetings and also helped with the general running of the society.

I mastered essential forensic practices, including firearm and ballistic, fire, hair and fibre and human tissue analysis, statistics, fingerprinting, crime scene investigations, molecular biology and analytical and organic chemistry. I carried out the whole process from collecting forensic evidence at a mock crime scene, analysing it at the laboratory and finally being cross-examined in court. I selected biology based modules and so I also gained a solid grounding in biology; genetics, microbiology and pathology were of my own particular interest.

In my role as a student representative for my course, I was often approached by students with problems and it was my responsibility to make sure that their voices were heard by lecturers, module leaders, as well as in departmental meetings.
