They frequently place me at a local Children's Hospital whereby I have the opportunity to undertake a wide range of clinical interventions such as measuring and recording vital signs, enteral feeding, bowel and bladder management, pain management, tissue viability, airway management, seizure management, administration of medication, wound management, and the recognition and response of a medical emergency. I'm also frequently placed at a school for children with profound physical disability and complex epilepsy. There are very specific skills which are required as an agency nurse such as flexibility, adaptability, being a fast learner and being able to work as part of a team.I particularly enjoy working for Whizz Kidz - a children's charity which is dedicated to assisting physically disabled young people to be as mobile as possible. Whizz Kidz run frequent 'Camps' - overnight residential trips where I am the nurse in charge and responsible for all of the medication as well as the physical and mental well-being of the young person. I also undertook the on-call duty nurse role for one of the agencies. I lead, develop and am responsible for managing, planning and coordinating the Special School Health Service in Merton. I provide an innovative framework for the continual improvement of health care for Children and Young People with complex needs through the application of evidence based practice. I work in partnership with statutory and voluntary agencies to develop and maintain systems to provide appropriate health needs, therapy support and continuity of care. I lead on the development of the service and review policies and protocols for children and young people with complex needs. I provide leadership and act as a source of clinical expertise to members of the school health service allied health professionals and multi-agency partners. It is also my responsibility to ensure effective communication processes exist between the School leadership team and the health team, and the key element to my role is actively encouraging integration and improved communication between health and education. I was able to identify and respond to local health needs, undertake health needs assessments, deliver the UK's vaccination programme, undertake enuresis clinics including initial assessments and deliver teaching of Personal, Sexual and Health Education and personal hygiene sessions to children aged 4-16. I have also been required to attend: case conferences, core groups, Child in Need meetings, Team Around the Family meetings and Team around the Child meetings. I ensure that documentation is written promptly and to a high standard, I have frequent liaison with professionals including teachers, I communicate with children and their parents and carers on a wide range of health issues, provide training to school staff, undertake home visits and I also advise and supporting schools and the local community with their public health agendas (eg smoking cessation, healthy eating, sun safety). I've also been involved in policy writing and the creation of individual health care plans. I was also responsible for creating policies and implementing, maintaining and updating them as required, writing reports for annual reviews and LAC reviews and building professional relationships with outside agencies including social services, CAMHS and hospital consultants. I managed a clinical team, and I was responsible for ensuring that their clinical skills and knowledge are continually updated.
