“Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood”That’s habit 5 from Stephen Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I’ve noticed that I’m at my best when I use this habit effectively. How have I used this habit so far in my different positions?I started my first engineer internship at ABB being told by the manager that I wasn’t qualified to work the position because I wasn’t an electrical engineer student. By the end of the semester, I was able to show that I was willing to learn by listening to my project leaders.I finished my internships with Duke Energy at three different locations. Deep in the Wabash River for my first position, I learned the importance how important water quality is to a power plant and to the ecosystem. For the second location, I earned respect from the operators by listening to what they had to teach me. During the last location, an outage was happening. Listening to my managers and protocol kept me safe and helped the plant last longer. My first job out of college, Surface Combustion, taught me not only is it important to listen to people, but also to the sounds around you. As I assisted with checking out and starting up new equipment, hearing what the equipment was making was a good indication if it was working correctly. At Process Results, I listened and watched a lot of YouTube videos to learn how to use AutoCAD. I used my new AutoCAD skills and my managers’ lessons to help customers keep their plants safe with updating plant drawings and properly sized safety equipment.
