Remit to shape and lead the Corporate Responsibility (CR) agenda within a major energy utility company. Reporting to the Chief Counsel and working closely with the Group Chief Executive, Sam Laidlaw, the Centrica Executive Committee and Mary Francis, Senior Independent Director, Chair of the CR Committee and Board lead on CR. Appointed to lead a major change in the companies approach to Sustainability. The sector is under increasing pressure to demonstrate that it can be trusted to deliver energy in a responsible manner, at an acceptable price and with decreasing carbon emissions. In the UK as the leading player in the market Centrica takes the brunt of this pressure. The CR strategy is designed to address this.• Designed and launched new sustainable business strategy focussed on earning trust, delivering lower carbon energy and fuel poverty. Concept adopted as the strap line to Centrica’s strategic priorities and as core to company strategy. • Implemented the strategy ensuring that commercial interests and sustainability are aligned• Put in place strong governance processes ensuring that accountability is clear and decision making effective.• Overhauled the management of CR within the business units with a focus on improving capabilities and prioritisation.• Activated the commercial and sustainability elements of “energy for a low carbon world”.• Integrated CR into business risk processes working with the Head of Risk and risk teams at Group and Business unit level, • Work closely with M&A and business development to ensure that the environmental, social and ethical risks of acquisitions and new areas of business and identified and controls put in place.• Re-evaluating and re-designing KPIs, targets and the performance reporting system.• Established stakeholder engagement programme and external stakeholder panel to ensure that the company builds constructive relationships with key players and identifies external risks and opportunities.

New role with a remit to establish and lead the sustainability function within a major investment bank. Immediate priority was on the delivery of policy, strategy, governance and programmes and the establishment of a global sustainability function. • Sustainability Principles, Strategy and Governance developed and agreed by the Executive Committee. • Identifying the key areas of environmental and social impact within the bank• Membership of Global Investment and Strategic review committees – assessed all major deals for environmental and social risks• As President of the Lehman Brothers Council redesigned the Council to position the Firm to deliver commercial benefit through the identification, development and deployment of climate change financial products and services and to be a leading and constructive influence in climate change policy• Advisory work with investment banking clients including Corporates, Private Equity and International Organisations in the UK and US

Led Corporate Responsibility (CR) for the Vodafone Group globally and ensured achievement of one the companies 6 strategic goals – to be a responsible business. This was a new role and involved the establishment of the Corporate Responsibility function and team. Worked directly with Chairman, CEO and Executive Committee. Involved pulling together cross functional teams across the Vodafone businesses around the world. Role included:• Development and implementation of CR strategy, policy, programmes and performance measures. • Marketing – working to develop products and services with significant social benefit • Development and implementation of public CR reporting • Establishment of a social investment fund .• Development and implementation of internal and external communications programmes.• Supporting M&A activities • Development of an active stakeholder engagement programme • Creation of and ultimately Trustee of Vodafone Group Foundation.

November 1999 to 2000 – Global Fuel Product Strategy, BP Amoco p.l.c.Developing a new global fuel strategy designed to address the air quality and health issues resulting from the use of fossil fuels in transportation. This provided a major new direction to a multibillion dollar business in 29,000 outlets in around 30 countries. Strategic to BP Amoco Group. Worked with Brand team on rebranding of BP.

Headed a team responsible to the Board of BP Amoco for developing strategic environmental policy for the Group. This included climate change, biodiversity, ozone depletion and water resources. The strategic objectives were to build highly innovative and progressive policies underpinned by substantive programmes that would allow BP to move away from the behaviours of a conventional oil and gas company.

1994 to 1997 Secondment from BP to IPIECA (International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association) as Deputy General SecretaryIPIECA is a coalition of major oil and gas companies, with widely differing agendas and cultures, working together on global environmental issues. The Secretariat had to balance the divergent interests of members to the overall benefit of the industry. Role included:• Managing the operation of IPIECA.• Working with senior members of the oil and gas industry, other business, governments, the United Nations and NGOs. • Management of the IPIECA climate change programme• Heading the oil and gas industry delegation to the UN climate change negotiations.
