A long-time leader in the news industry, I recently have focused my service in two areas: 1. The future of journalism: building audiences, nonprofit news media and educating the next generation of journalists. 2. As former chair and current member of my college's Board of Trustees, the future of higher education, especially the liberal arts, and the board's role in assuring the quality of programs, financial sustainability and access to students of all backgrounds.I have received national awards for my work in building a diverse newsroom, including recruitment and coverage of diverse communities. A project I oversaw won the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting. I was president of the American Society of News Editors in 2008-2009 and of the society's foundation from 2011-13. I now serve as treasurer of the ASNE Foundation, chair the board of a non-profit news publication and its web sites, the Adirondack Explorer, and serve as treasurer of another non-profit news organization, The Philadelphia Public School Notebook. I served three times as a Pulizer juror. Currently, I am a member of the Accrediting Committee of the American Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC), and have participated in numerous site team visits to universities seeking accreditation for their journalism and communication programs.
