Charlotte Leber is Founder of the Art-Therapy Foundation (ATF), a non-profit organization with a mission to support art therapy programs (art, music, dance) in Switzerland for children - neo-natal infants to young adults - suffering from serious illnesses and accidents. Art therapy (AT) offers a means– art & imagination – other than words to express suffering and has a proven positive influence on the healing process and morale of children and their families. Artistic expression, an essential step in the healing process, allows patients to exteriorize their fears and use creativity through artistic experiences, bringing comfort and dissociation from pain. Key to this process is the art therapist who works with a pluri-disciplinary team of doctors, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, teachers, ergotherapists and dieticians. As a profession, art therapists are trained in both art and therapy and are knowledgeable about human development, psychological theories, clinical practice, spiritual, multicultural and artistic traditions, and the healing potential of art. Professionals and associations in the international medical community recognize the benefits of art therapy. In Switzerland, programs were started in 2000, with non-profit association status acquired in 2008 when the Art Therapy Foundation was created. Currently, ATF supports programs helping children in the most important hospitals throughout Switzerland. The ultimate goal is to have the capacity and resources to respond to every request from hospital and health care centers wishing to integrate AT programs. The Foundation also aims to contribute to the scientific study and research of art therapy with resources needed to advance clinical, professional, educational and research efforts. As Founder and “Chief Evangelist”, Charlotte is passionate about this cause and travels around the globe as the ATF Brand Ambassador.
