About Charl Van Der Westhuizen
I have been building software in a professional setting for 26 years, 23 years in Java, 19 years as a software architect.I worked for 14 years as a software architect of FNB's bespoke ATM application. The job involved many interesting software development concerns:* Event-driven, state machine architecture;* Application device integration - pin pad, card readers, cash dispensers, chip cards and more;* Digital- and application security - hardware encryption and remote key loading, secure data transport, secure payment card transactions (EMV);* Back-end service integration - REST API, SOAP web services, TCP-based message protocols;* User interface design and optimization for customer experience.I always relished the projects that had to do with EMV - payment card acquiring. I implemented the application integration for an EMV kernel into the bespoke ATM application. I was always involved as an advisor in all recertification projects. I also did the design and implementation for the integration of contactless card readers (NFC readers) into the application.During my time as software architect for FNB, I also fulfilled the role of software development manager for about 8 years. This involved allocation of work, performance management and technical interviews of job applicants.From 2000 to 2008, I worked on many different JEE/J2EE projects - various Web applications running different application servers using various databases and frameworks.During my time with Dariel Solutions from 2006 to 2008, I was also involved in a couple of formal software reviews for clients. The objective of such reviews were usually to review and analyze a specific system and make recommendations on its replacement, modernization or refurbishment.We live in an exciting time of astonishing technological innovation, and I would very much like to be part of it.
