OwnerHrm Parent Nov 2006 - Dec 2010Halifax, Canada AreaI started HRM Parent, an online community and guide to life with kids in the Halifax, Nova Scotia area, after moving there and finding a lack of useful and current information for parents. I sold the website right before the birth of my second child, and it is still going strong in its new hands. I built the website up from nothing - just a crazy idea that wouldn't go away - to a popular site with about 4000 members and a Twitter and Facebook community. At the time of its sale to new owners, there was an event calendar, a directory of parenting-related goods and services, a blog, a playground directory, a classified section, a forum, and a rainy day activities section. Running the site gave me the opportunity to learn a lot of new skills! On the technical side, I learnt how to use Joomla (a content management system), and I got to grips with basic HTML, CSS, and graphic design. I sought out and organized advertisers - both local and online businesses. I sourced all the content for the site, including liaising with numerous organizations and businesses, managing guest bloggers, and writing much of the blog myself. I also wrote and designed monthly enewsletters for the site's members, promotional enewsletters to current and potential advertisers, and all promotional material.
