In the Good was a weekly newsletter I created for entrepreneurs and freelancers who give a damn.Subscribers received a mix of practical and thought-provoking resources to help them build sustainable, socially conscious and profitable companies.inthegood.co

I started HRM Parent, an online community and guide to life with kids in the Halifax, Nova Scotia area, after moving there and finding a lack of useful and current information for parents. I sold the website right before the birth of my second child, and it is still going strong in its new hands. I built the website up from nothing - just a crazy idea that wouldn't go away - to a popular site with about 4000 members and a Twitter and Facebook community. At the time of its sale to new owners, there was an event calendar, a directory of parenting-related goods and services, a blog, a playground directory, a classified section, a forum, and a rainy day activities section. Running the site gave me the opportunity to learn a lot of new skills! On the technical side, I learnt how to use Joomla (a content management system), and I got to grips with basic HTML, CSS, and graphic design. I sought out and organized advertisers - both local and online businesses. I sourced all the content for the site, including liaising with numerous organizations and businesses, managing guest bloggers, and writing much of the blog myself. I also wrote and designed monthly enewsletters for the site's members, promotional enewsletters to current and potential advertisers, and all promotional material.

I provided editorial services to non-profit organisations and ethical businesses. Services included writing and rewriting, editing, proofreading and project management. Clients included Directory of Social Change, Green Futures, Mencap, Rathbone Training, National Council for Voluntary Youth Services, SeeAbility, Arthritis News, ITAD, Sage Publications and others. Projects included direct mail, annual reports, fundraising materials, academic journals, magazine articles, newsletters and books.

- Developed relationships with and secured donations from new and existing charitable foundations- Identified, developed and wrote successful applications to the Big Lottery Fund and charitiable foundations

- Helped to set up a training project for community groups and wrote funding applications

- Conducted assessments of grant applications to the international grants programme, wrote reports and managed external assessors

- Was responsible for financial and office administration
