Charmaine Minniefield draws from indigenous traditions as seen throughout Africa and the Diaspora. Her work explores African and African-American ritual from a feminist perspective. Drawing from historical images, stories and places, Minniefield seeks, reclaims and retells lost narratives. From charcoal to acrylic on canvas; from digital mixed media and video projection to site specific installation and public art, her work ritually celebrates women while conversing between the past and the present, and between spirit space and the physical. Her recent body of work features historical images from the archives of Spelman College where she currently serves as faculty in the Department of Art and Visual Culture.Charmaine Minniefield has also served the southeast as a producer and arts administrator for nearly 20 years, holding positions with such arts organizations as the National Black Arts Festival, the High Museum of Art and the Fulton County Department of Art and Culture, Foxfire and Flux Project. As a producer and arts activist, she has created impactful projects with such organizations as The King Center, Points of Light and Alternate ROOTs, to name a few. She serves on the boards of T. Lang Dance and C4 Atlanta. Her work is featured in a number of public and private collections and as a muralist, her walls can be seen throughout the City of Atlanta and beyond.

Visual ArtistThe New Freedom Project Jan 1995 - PresentGreater Atlanta AreaMy work invokes the power of the ancestors. By creating visual road maps from the past to the present paved by the history and stories, love and heartache, success and failures of the ancestors, it celebrates the Ancestral Memory in us all. I believe that by reclaiming their stories and by praising and committing to their memory, we will better understand ourselves and our collective potential. As a visual artist, I seek images of loving women who embody leadership and power. I reclaim their power from traditional objects of servitude and submission and then re-present them as the truth of what they were/are - POWER HOUSES. I believe in their wisdom. I only pray to make them proud by holding dear their legacy in my own life. The New Freedom Project - celebrates freedom as realized and experienced throughout American history and beyond. This project recalls Emancipation and recognizes the achievement and strength of a people who although most recently affected by slavery, somehow created a place for themselves within the shifting American landscape. The New Freedom Project is inspired by this pivotal moment in history and subsequent freedom movements since. This community-based arts initiative includes an artist residency, historical preservation, community collaboration, genealogical research and a final exhibition of work inspired by the history of each community it serves. The New Freedom Project engages audiences in a journey through history, as they celebrate and remember their ancestors by recording and retelling their stories - the American story of freedom. The resulting body of work, presents the ancestors as sacred symbols or icons which celebrate the past, hoping to affect change in the present in order to inform our path to mutual respect and understanding in the future.
