I used to draw pictures on napkins and write dialogue on the back of receipts as an undergrad. I had a job at a theme park, right under a very noisy roller coaster but I was still creating. Back then, one of my ambitions was to have a business card with a title like "storyteller" or "raconteur" if I was feeling just the right amount of pretentious. I wasn't sure if there was much of a future in what I was doing at the time. All I knew was that I wanted to enjoy what I did and hopefully, not go broke doing it. Customer service was where I got my start. From food service to tech support, I made my way to Finance. I went from assisting cardholders with their credit card statements to helping hedge funds make investments for millions. Though it is a great industry to build a career in and I am grateful for my time in it, I found myself being pulled back to my passion. Finance had been good to me but it didn’t inspire the kind of joy that a creative endeavor would have inspired. It was my time with Nyla Nova STEMversity that put things into perspective for me. Research for one of the articles that I wrote (titled "Jobs for Young Techstroverts") gave me the idea that UX/UI might be a field to consider. I was surprised by how quickly I took to learning the concepts and overwhelmed by how much I still had to learn. I'll admit that I never noticed the story that a skilled Designer can tell just by focusing in on the details and using them to emphasize the message of the website. Now, these are the things I notice first and as long as it says "storyteller" on my business card, these are the things I plan to keep noticing.
