About Charmel Gaulden

Charmel Gaulden is the CEO and President at the Foundation for Louisiana. She is the co-chair of the Greater New Orleans Funders Network (GNOFN) criminal justice action table, a collection of seven local and national funders working to support equity and justice in the Greater New Orleans region. Most recently, she served as the Chief Operating Officer at the Foundation for Louisiana. During her tenure the organization strengthen and implemented policies and procedures that allowed the organization to move funding to justice based nonprofit organizations in Louisiana. Additionally, she bolstered the expansion of the organization's fiscal sponsorship program, an nonprofit ecosystem development initiative. Ms. Gaulden developed strategic grantmaking initiatives while serving as Vice President of Public Safety Grants at Baptist Community Ministries. She supported grantees working to build a safer and more just region. Ms. Gaulden managed over $3.6 million in strategic grants and contracts.Ms. Gaulden served as the Executive Director of the Gulf Coast Fair Housing Center (GCFHC). She has designed and conducted over 50 trainings for volunteers, community members and lawyers. As a result of her leadership GCFHC served as a plaintiff in the lawsuit to ensure equal recovery from Hurricane Katrina for Mississippians which resulted in $132.8 million being provided for housing recovery in Mississippi. Ms. Gaulden served as Staff Attorney for the Honorable Stephen S. Goss, Honorable Loring A. Gray and Honorable Wille E. Lockette in Albany, Georgia. She helped to streamline court processes while highlighting the activities of the award winning drug court through her work on the article, “Mental Health Court Programs in Rural and Nonaffluent Jurisdictions.” As an adjunct professor at Albany State University, Ms. Gaulden taught Criminal Evidence and Courtroom Procedure, Constitutional Procedure in Criminal Justice, Poverty and Welfare, Study Management and Juvenile Delinquency.Licensed in both Georgia and Louisiana, Ms. Gaulden is a civil rights attorney who does provides pro bono legal services in the area of veterans’ appeals and fair housing. Ms. Gaulden provides consulting services to communities engaged in strategic advocacy, stakeholder education and effective program implementation.
