Senior Technical Consultant

Current

Cypress, Tx, Us

Assess-IoT provides consulting services to mid-sized companies who are beginning their journey toward the “internet of things”. My experience with packet networks, security, embedded devices, and system integration allows me to guide our clients in the right direction. Currently my focus is on LPWAN technologies and SmartCity applications.

Sep 2016 - Present

Director Of Software Development

Hanover, Maryland, Us

Hands-on technical leader for a cross functional engineering organization with offices in 6 sites across 3 time zones. My primary responsibility was the planning and delivery of the operating system for the Ciena 8700 PacketWave product launch. The 8700 is a carrier class Ethernet aggregation system featuring protection switching, modular redundancy, in-service software upgrade, MPLS, G.8032, 100gig Ethernet, DWDM, coherent optics, and much more. I worked closely with PLM and PLA to define product requirements and coordinate customer engagements. I worked with hardware and software teams to complete the designs and project plans. I worked with operations and verification teams to ensure the 8700 software would meet or exceed our customer’s quality expectations. Over the next 3 years my team and I worked rapidly to deliver 5 additional major software releases to introduce new features and secure new customer wins. Overall we exceeded the project goals for customer trials, customer wins, units sold, and total revenue. The software for this project was written in C and C++ running on Linux. During this time period I was also responsible for several additional projects including:• JITC and Common Criteria security certification for the Ciena 39xx product line• Triage of incoming bug reports for legacy products and managing resources effectively in order to deliver the needed customer patches with minimal disruption to ongoing product development. • Managing the transfer of our entire lab to a new facility and finding creative ways to minimizing the impact to the development team.• Managing the team supporting our internal development tools including continuous integration builds, daily regression testing, and linux workstation distros.

Jul 2011 - Jun 2016

Senior Software Development Manager

Hanover, Maryland, Us

I stepped up into the role of senior manager during a time of great uncertainty and transition for the company. My team was developing software for a new product line for the wireless access market. AT&T was our first target customer and our small startup company was competing with Cisco and Alcatel. I was given several responsibilities: manage a team of 33 engineers, drive the 3911 software releases for AT&T, and manage sustaining projects for legacy products. While this was happening on our company was acquired by Ciena and we merged our engineering team with another team located in Ottawa Canada specializing in embedded Linux. We worked together to optimize our combined resources and deliver the best possible software for the 3911 product line and win our first long term contract from AT&T. For the next two years I continued to work closely with AT&T to deliver new features, understand their pain points, and deliver innovative solutions. Ciena was the only network equipment vendor chosen by AT&T for their 2011 supplier award for outstanding performance. This project used C, Linux, MS Project, MKS, Accurev.

Feb 2008 - Jun 2011

Principal Software Engineer

Us

As a principal engineer I developed software for carrier class network equipment. I was responsible for the design and implementation for the following software components:• System bootstrap and software upgrade manager for a multi-blade system featuring redundancy, rapid bootstrap, zero touch provisioning, and automatic rollback. • Ciena’s zero-touch provisioning system which became a key feature to secure multiple customer wins• Key contributor to our next generation system architecture for multi-blade modular systems. I worked on blade management, high availability, in-service software upgrade, bootstrap, protocol stack, control frame tunneling.• High performance IGMP protocol application capable of managing the efficient delivery of video over IP to thousands of subscribers. The design was object oriented and coded in C and ran on OSE and Linux.• A flexible and fault tolerant file transfer service for a system with removable line blades• Device drivers for I2C, SPI, PCI, DMA, and custom FPGA interfaces• A modular and efficient data packet ingress/egress service supporting many clients, QoS, oversubscription, and DMA transfers with interrupt handlers.• Created a Jenkins automated build cluster running 40 jobs for three product lines• Awarded 6 patents for innovation in the area of Ethernet, multicast, control packets, and high availability

Dec 2005 - Feb 2008

Staff Software Engineer

Us

World Wide Packets was a startup company that would introduce high speed fiber to the residential broadband market. As the first software engineer hired by the company my challenge here was simple to understand: I was to hire our software development team, create our first product design for a residential gateway device, bring this new design to market, and complete all of this within the first year. The project was a success and the company would eventually be acquired by Ciena and become the leading supplier of Ethernet access equipment in the US market. Here are some of my accomplishments in this position:• Software architect for the LE-210 carrier grade ethernet switch featuring zero touch provisioning, remote management, redundant software images, non-blocking switch fabric, and flexible VLAN tag capabilities. My design included the system bootstrap, memory map, power on self test, basic networking and DHCP, debug shell, watchdog, data cookies, PCI bus driver, and the code development environment.• Responsible for hardware bringup, bootloader, device drivers, BSP, and RTOS bringup for 4 unique CPU subsystems on 6 different boards• Created a fully integrated development environment enabling rapid build/load/debug cycles and remote debugging of multi-threaded applications on multi-blade systems using the Green Hills debugging toolset. • On two occasions I traveled to the customer site to help the customer integrate our products with their network management systems.• Worked with logic analyzers and scopes to identify CPU/ASIC bugs. Then worked with the vendors to characterize the bugs and develop workarounds.

Jan 2000 - Dec 2005

Staff Software Engineer

São Paulo, Sp, Br

I started as a software developer and worked my way into a management position where I led a small software team working on the MV-400 project. The MV-400 was the world's first 1RU high-definition video encoder which won the prestigious "Best of Show" award at NAB. The MV-400 was unmatched in price, performance, small form factor, power, and raw video quality. The team worked great together and we completed the project ahead of schedule.
