For several months as a payed intern, and then another two and half years as a full-time employee, I worked at P&N, an audit and tax accounting firm based out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. My capacity within the firm was as a member of the Information Technology department. I operated in a team of four coworkers and our department director to service, maintain, and update machines for, and provide software and server support to, a pool of around 750 employees in 5 separate offices and across multiple states. I operated a trouble ticket support station for remote connect sessions in addition to consulting and presenting research on firm purchases of both web design software and automated text message systems. I also designed and implemented an overhaul to our machine formatting procedure which earning me both recognition and a bonus within my first year of full time employment. As our firm expanded to new offices in different states, I traveled regularly to perform initial setup of the IT infrastructure in the building. This often entailed acting as a point of contact for a number of wiring contractors and server sales firms. In my position, I was a member of administrative support to the firm and had an office located next to and in regular contact with the CEO, who had just been elected president of the AICPA, as well as the CFO and the directors of all our departments. While I was able to develop my understanding of technology and the role it plays in the modern office environment, the most instructive lesson from my time at P&N was the behind the curtain view of the structure of organizations in the business world. How departments interact to promote both sectional and overarching company goals and the process of ensuring those goals are met as well as the decision-making process of what strategic directions and goals the company was going to set in order to grow.

Bryan/College Station, Texas Area

The businesses listed above were all collectively operated by one rotating staff of servers. Paddock lane is a popular bar in what is known as Northgate, an area of College Station with the highest grouping of local night clubs. At Paddock Lane I worked nights, at first as a Bouncer then later as both a Bar Back and Floor. As a bouncer, my duties were to ensure only the appropriate age clientele were permitted to enter while simultaneously evaluating the sobriety of potential entrants. As a Bar Back I was responsible for maintaining a constant supply of continually dwindling bar resources from stores in our walk in cooler and supply closet. This job often entailed lifting and maneuvering kegs which would range in weight depending on their remaining volume from 50lbs to nearly 200lbs, often by myself. As a Floor I was responsible for all activity within the bar. This occasionally meant confrontations with petulant and unruly patrons, but more frequently meant the supervision of clients to ensure our bar did not contribute to the delinquency of minors. Tipsy Turtle was another of the Northgate night clubs and my roles here were much the same as at Paddock Lane, first a bouncer then a Bar Back and Floor. The Proudest Monkey was the newest of the three nightclubs but in addition to being a nightclub this was also a restaurant. This nightclub, unlike the previous two, was located in Historic Downtown Bryan. In addition to my responsibilities as a Bouncer, Bar Back, and Floor; I adopted the roles of Server, Expediter, and Cook.

As a web consultant, I was responsible for fielding inbound emails and calls from various car dealerships around the nation in order to maintain and upgrade the websites and email accounts of those businesses. I underwent and completed rigorous training in web design and the use of proprietary software which facilitated our web site design. Most editing was done in HTML through various internet browsers and operating systems. I frequently used all Microsoft products in both the reactive and proactive maintenance of the websites and was given specific training in the use of Outlook Express as both an organizational and communicative tool. This job made use of my background in customer service and enriched my already extensive knowledge of computers and the internet. I worked closely with a small group of immensely skilled individuals who were regarded in the Digital Marketing Community as having the highest customer satisfaction and lowest issue resolution turn-around time.

While employed as a debt collector, I was trained extensively as a customer service representative. Every day on practically every call I was met with a hostile consumer who was to be treated with dignity and respect despite any provocation. The customer service experience for a debt collector entailed being called every name in the book in any creative order imaginable and still being required to respond in professional and constructive manners that would inevitably lead to conflict over monetary transactions. While working this job I was entrusted with account numbers and high amount transactions to be wired electronically based on my say so with recorded authorizations bound by strict federal laws. As a Compliance Auditor, it was my responsibility to ensure that other collectors followed the required state and company guidelines for discussing debts as per the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. This meant regularly critiquing and sometimes retraining of the collection of employees I was monitoring. The Auditor work was heavily reliant on Excel spreadsheets and regular email correspondence. So, to summarize, this job gave me the opportunity to work with large sums of money and incredibly private information while requiring I maintain professional levels of discretion, courtesy, and problem solving. In my Compliance Auditor position I was responsible for the shortcomings of others and for the flagging of their mistakes in addition to prevention of further mistakes through training and rigorous correspondence.
