I have a variety of passions including volleyball, snowboarding, and playing the piano, but since coming to college, I have found my true calling in life: writing. As a political science major at the University of Utah, I have always enjoyed my studies because my major was heavily based on writing. The summer between my junior and senior year, however, I realized that I did not necessarily enjoy political science because of the subject material, but rather because I had to write. This prompted me to apply for the school paper, The Daily Utah Chronicle, where I became the head beat writer for the school's hockey team, and was recently promoted to be the assistant editor of the sports desk for The Daily Utah Chronicle. Writing for the school paper has been my favorite extracurricular activity I've done throughout college, and I want to continue to pursue the field of journalism and media writing.My passion for writing and strengths as a writer do not just apply to journalism, as I interned for Hungryman Productions, a commercial production company in Los Angeles, in the summer of 2021 and it was here that I found a passion for screenwriting. I enrolled in various film classes during the fall 2021 semester, and in addition to writing for the school paper, I began writing a handful of scripts and produced several short films which I believe to be of great quality. I believe that I am a skilled writer because of my ability to understand people as well as having certain creative intangibles that can't be taught. Throughout college, I coached several volleyball teams and held executive rolls in my fraternity. Both of these jobs required me to understand what makes people tick, and I believe that this gives me an edge in my writing. From a journalism perspective, understanding people on a different level allows me to tell stories not by merely just reporting on an event, but also by adding a certain human element to the story that many journalists fail to include. From a screenwriting perspective, I believe that I am able to create and develop a variety of characters that make my film projects unique.
