About Ian Tanner
I have worked in facilities management and physical plant management for the last 9 years. This includes mechanical repairs of equipment like chillers, boilers, and pumps. Monitoring the daily operations of medical and research facilities as well as comfort systems for administrative offices. My career started in residential construction as a frame carpenter which led to becoming a project manager for a general contractor. I was responsible for all facets of construction including managing sub-contractors, making sure that projects were completed on schedule, within budget and exceeding customer’s expectations. From there I went to work in hospital maintenance were I was responsible for operating and maintaining a 60 bed rehabilitation hospital. Duties there ranged from daily operations of HVAC systems, pool maintenance, water treatment, plumbing, electrical, lighting, and automated controls systems. My current role at UNTHSC has me supervising a crew of eight operators. We are responsible for running and maintain the physical plant systems and automated controls for the Health Science Center campus in Fort Worth. The campus has a mix of clinics, classroom space, lab research, anatomy, and animal research facilities.

Utilities Foreman
Utilities Foreman must totally understand the many unique building mechanical and electrical systems and their controls. The Utilities Foreman must be able to diagnose the source of a malfunction and supervise the making of the necessary adjustments, repairs or direct the appropriate trade to make the necessary repairs. Monitor operation and maintenance of all mechanical systems equipment, including building automation systems, air distribution systems, chillers, boilers, hot water tanks, ventilation equipment, air handling equipment, motors, pumps, valves, compressors, air conditioners, and related environmental equipment to insure safe and efficient operation. Daily checks the Building Automation System for proper operation and mechanical malfunctions. Programs building automation equipment for routine and event-driven facility equipment schedules to support campus events. Update energy management system graphics with current floor plans and upgrades. Schedules, coordinates and provides field supervision of Utilities staff involved in maintenance of all HVAC and life safety equipment, insures that personal, supplies and equipment are efficiently utilized.
