This position is responsible for providing an integrated system of program support services to school teams and families of students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Responsibilities include servicing students' IEPs which consist of parent education and training, leading and directing paraprofessionals, case coordination for students with larger multidisciplinary team, providing training in areas specific to autism such as applied behavior analysis, consultation and collaboration with student's families and school teams.The assignments involve a high degree of independence in their performance of the full range of counseling, skill training and support services to individuals with behavioral problems. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of a clinical psychologist or other qualified professional, who may not be readily available at the work site, or a non-technical supervisor.

Windward Community College is a two-year community college under the University of Hawaii system. They offer many types of associates degrees and certificates that students can earn. I interned under counselor Dr. Ann Lemke. Dr. Lemke is currently the Disabilities Services and Accommodations Counselor, as well as Early Admit and Running Start. She is also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). Because of her counseling position I was able to meet and work with a diverse set of students. Students that I see range from high school students who are enrolled in a college course while in high school, to students with a physical or developmental delay. Hawaii Behavioral Health is a private organization that provides social support, behavioral intervention, and therapy services in both a school and community setting. I worked as a paraprofessional skills trainer. I had the opportunity to work 1:1 with children primarily in a special education and regular classroom setting. The children that I had provided service had developmental or intellectual disabilities. Services that were provided for the child were based off specific objectives and goals to best help the child succeed. Behavioral approaches and techniques, such as using a reward system, positive and negative reinforcement were integrated when providing the service. I also recorded records data sets tailored specifically to the child I was assigned to at the time. The data would be turned in to Hawaii Behavioral Health and the Department of Education to track the progress of the child. Data was recorded with different methods, including using a tally system, likert scale, symbols (+, -) and abbreviations (vp=verbal prompts). The Autism Treatment Center of America houses the Son-Rise program. The program provides treatment to individuals who have Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities. I was able to volunteer in the Son-Rise program through my practicum course as a graduation requirement from the University of Hawaii. Originally a one year agreement, I enjoyed the opportunity to continue to learn about Autism, and continued to volunteer with the program until December 2016As a volunteer member I made weekly in-home visits to a family home whose child has Autism. The parents are members of the Son-Rise program and had received extensive training with incorporating the program’s principles. The Son-Rise program focused on social development. This approach empowered the child, as I learned to practice patience and empathy. The core principle was to meet where the child was, and not the opposite. If he was stimming, or doing a repetitive behavior I copied him. By practicing this I attempted to understand what he was feeling and relate. Because sessions were located in a playroom I also learned that creativity and flexibility were important traits to have. This allowed me to experiment with different types toys, books, balls, anything to stimulate the child’s attention and to promote social interaction.
