About Seth Thomas

I've been fortunate to have wide experience across the tech industry ranging from the game industry to higher education to open source startups. Complex distributed systems, troubleshooting esoteric hardware, and automating all the things are just a few of my passions. As a maintainer and open source contributor I am fortunate to help others just about every day and understand well the burdens of open source governance.

Current

Polycount was around when the game industry was budding, building a faithful online community of both professional and amateur game artists since 1998. We host high profile challenges and contest with companies such as Valve, Vigil (RIP), and Riot providing our community opportunities to not only get recognition but also profit from their hard work. You may seen the results with Valve's Polycount Pack, monthly Dota 2 item sets, or our amazing 2014 Riot Contest. As a co-owner I nominally wear the technologist hat but spend most of my time on the business side of things trying to keep revenue stable and build our site up without losing our distinctive charm.

Aug 2010 - Dec 2010

Directory Services Lead

Austin, Tx, Us

As a member of the Identity and Access Management team, under the Applications group of ITS, I assist in managing the nearly 5 million identities on record. Currently I am the area lead and administrator for Directory Services which includes a private enterprise directory, public white pages, and related Natural (mainframe based) applications. Responsibilities scale the entire stack from the hardware all the way up through the service deployment and management level. Official state title is an inaccurate but amusing label of "Software Engineer".

May 2009 - Jul 2010

Build Master

San Diego, Ca, Us

I supported the build system, related hardware and management systems for Star Wars Galaxies, a long runningonline game (MMORPG) comprising over 30 live and test clusters requiring 24/7 availability. I was the last to touchcode before it went live, and the first responder in IRC when something exploded. Development was agile, availability was high, and it was always mission critical; this is where I had the privilege to cut my teeth in the game industry. My opus was a assisting operations in a major systems reshuffle to reduce hardware while simultaneously increasing performance. After studying the metrics for a week we (myself and operations) were able to, without even coming close to using up our maintenance window or having any game issues on restart, both reduce the hardware footprint and increase performance by an average of 20%. It's one of my favorite projects and one where the extensive planning and testing completely paid off.

Mar 2007 - Apr 2009

Systems Administrator (Student)

Austin, Tx, Us

Served as division's system administrator while being a part-time student. This was the first time I was in an homogeneously Apple environment, with Xserves down to first gen iMacs. Quickly became an OSX expert, having experience with 10.3 onward including the Server offering. Implemented directory services for machine and user management as well as creating a base of documentation for the system staff.

Apr 2005 - Jan 2007

Senior Student Associate

Austin, Tx, Us

The Help Desk services a user base of 80,000+ current and former students, employees, and guests via phone, chat, e-mail and in person. The senior title implies you were not only able to keep sane during fall registration periods, but you could do so while teaching 2 other trainees and juggling a half dozen security audits. This help desk has produced some of the University's best IT personnel, given a preternatural understanding of the innerconnected workings of nearly every service offered to the campus. Was proud to work there and it remains one of my favorite postilions.
