I am a recent graduate in the Interdisciplinary Marine & Estuarine Sciences program, formerly R.I.P.T.I.D.E.S (NSF DGE-1633336) at San Francisco State University. I am currently looking for employment opportunities.I was a member of the Komada Lab at the Estuary & Ocean Science Center (EOS Center), a San Francisco State University marine research and education center, in Tiburon, CA. My thesis, entitled "Investigating Marine Sediments as Sources of 14C-depleted Dissolved Organic Carbon in the Deep Ocean" sought to answer the larger question regarding the sources of 14C-depleted dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the ocean. DOC is an enormous enigmatic yet globally significant pool of reduced carbon, approximately equivalent in magnitude to CO2 in the atmosphere. Its mean 14C age in the deep sea exceeds the mixing time of ocean basins by several fold, suggesting that it turns over at a very slow rate. However, the role of marine DOC in the oceanic and global cycles of carbon remains unclear because the origin of 14C-depleted DOC in seawater has yet to be resolved. Thus, my project focused on a sediment incubation where we were examining whether sediments could be sources of this aged carbon reservoir. Born and raised in the Bay Area, my long-term goals are to continue developing a greater understanding of this dynamic area and work towards resource management and protection of the Bay Area environment and the resilient people that reside here, especially in the wake of climate change.
