I am a Research Lead and Learning Scientist working in EdTech.I design and conduct research studies and analyze user data to create engaging and effective learning content and tools for college courses. I collaborate with instructors using zyBooks' web-native course books. zyBooks have less text with more interaction and innovative activities to help maximize student learning. I also lead research efforts for Muvik Labs to realize the efficacy of and improve the design of an innovative AI-assisted musical guided breathing app aiming to reduce anxiety, depression, and addiction-based cravings. In past experiences, I've created personalized and engaging learning experiences for kids and found ways to share information about kids' learning abilities and performance with their educators and families. I accomplished this using computational simulations of learner behavior, applying latent trait estimation algorithms, and working cross-functionally with clients, engineers, and product teams in order to ensure that partner company products met expectations. I have a strong background in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience and Linguistics, and extensive experience with experimental research methods, advanced statistical modeling (mixed models, latent trait models, nonlinear data analysis), and programming in R and Python. I completed my PhD studying how the motor system of the brain and our bodies contribute to perception, cognition, and empathy. I study the sensory and motor groundings (embodiment) of perception and cognition. For example, I look at how movements of the body influence perception and learning. I also look at how perceptual information influences the activation of the body and the motor areas of the brain. For example, I have found that if words appear in an ongoing, handwritten fashion, they engage the motor areas of the brain, and also result in improved memory for those words. This means that by the way that perceptual content is delivered to individuals influences what parts of the brain are involved in processing that information, and this has a large influence on how this material engages perceivers. I am currently using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to measure the excitability of the motor system during these different kinds of perceptual and cognitive tasks. A main goal of this endeavor is to better understand what role the motor system plays in such processes and how and why motor engagement is modulated by certain environmental factors. I have also used various other methodologies, including eye tracking, mouse tracking, EEG, and (my personal favorite) VR for experimental design. -
