I work with 1 or 2 providers each shift recording notes during patient encounters, inputting information into our health record system, obtaining past medical records, and facilitating patient flow. In February 2020, based on my performance, I was promoted to be a Scribe Ambassador, whose responsibility is to train newly hired scribes, facilitate their integration into the work environment, and set an example for all other scribes. I am also tasked with overseeing quality in patient charts, ensuring that visits are properly billed and that scribes are made aware of any mistakes.

As a medical assistant and scribe for a cardiology practice, I was able to participate in both direct and indirect care of the 30 patients we saw on a daily basis. I administered electrocardiograms and blood coagulation tests, measured vital signs and triaged patients, assisted with venous procedures, consolidated past medical histories in our health record system, and generated personalized visit notes written in first person. I used the notes to inform patients of their diagnoses in plain language, and to directly address patient concerns in a tone that was both sympathetic and constructive. I also gained experience in working at the front desk of the office, where I checked patients in and out, managed scheduling, and communicated with insurance companies, laboratories, and other physicians.

Agriculture is a primary contributor to Fresno’s economy. With limited farmland, ensuring successful plant growth is essential. Under the supervision of Dr. Alejandro Calderón-Urrea, I spent each week designing and conducting trial experiments on the efficacy of novel nematicides synthesized by our team. These nematicides, composed of chalcone compounds, are potentially safer for the environment and for human consumption compared to nematicides on the market today. As part of my research, I established baseline values, maintained C. elegans nematodes, created dilutions of our nematicide, prepared a 96-well plate, and conducted quantitative and qualitative observations of our results. My research culminated in a poster presentation at the California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology (CSUPERB) conference, a 20-minute oral presentation for my Honors College colloquium, and the completion of an Honors Thesis.

I was chosen to be a tutor for the Summer Bridge Program, which prepares first-generation college students for success. As part of this program, students from all over the Central Valley live in the Fresno State dorms for 4 weeks and attend classes. The week prior to their arrival, we were given 40 hours of training on the curriculum and how best to address the unique experiences of each student and the resources available to them. I was part of a team of counselors and professors who supported a cohort of 22 students and met weekly to discuss approaches for individual students.
