As a leader of a student-run organization, I learned how to think quickly on my feet, work with a limited budget, and mobilize others towards a shared vision.At the time, there were few student groups at WashU which catered to fashion enthusiasts, let alone one which offered them the opportunity to direct their passion towards a philanthropic goal. To introduce the organization with a "bang," we chose to stage a full runway show at the end of the semester. I was in charge of planning, promoting, and producing the event. The process required reaching out to local boutiques for clothes/accessories; asking local salons to donate their stylists and time; and convincing fellow students to model, deejay, help with set-ups, etc.Flyers advertising the event used photographs from shoots which I directed. I would first brainstorm a theme for a shoot, scout out locations for it, then develop a schedule around our student models' and photographers' busy calendars. The next step was visiting local retailers with my team to borrow pieces we could use. Overseeing photo shoots showed me how to (a) manage expectations, and (b) manage people. When you have multiple creative minds in the same room together, frictions are inevitable. I enjoyed the challenge of keeping everybody aligned and spirits high.Over 160+ guests attended our end of the semester Fashion's Night Out event. We were able to raise $5,000 for Charity Water through the pop-up trunk sale after the runway show. We also successfully spread the Styleta brand around campus, ensuring that the group would have high membership in semesters to come.
