I am a creative problem-solver with strong mathematical and programming skills in• Probability• Statistical Signal Processing• Numerical Optimization• Monte Carlo Simulation Methodology• C/C++/Matlab/PythonI am passionate about solving theoretical and practical aspects of engineering problems:• To study the Super-Efficient Monte Carlo Simulation methodology, I went very deep into chaos theory. At the same time, I developed scalable and parallelizable algorithms that significantly reduced computation time.• My invention at Qualcomm improved mobile phone's download speed by 80% using convex optimization and reinforcement learning techniques.I am enthusiastic about learning new techniques and technologies. I taught the course Applied Numerical Computing at UCLA using Julia, an exciting new language which has Matlab-like syntax with C-like performance. The course materials and my projects can be found on my Github page.I am looking forward to applying my skills to solve challenging problems in• Statistical Learning• Non-linear Optimization• High Performance Computing (Monte Carlo simulation, parallel computing)

Graduate Teaching AssistantUcla Sep 2012 - Jun 2015Los Angeles, Ca, UsI enjoy teaching. I consistently get excellent reviews from students for clarity and humor.I strive to make difficult concepts easier for students to understand. Students' aha moment keeps me motivated to improve my teaching. Here are the list of the courses I taught:Graduate course:• Estimation and Detection TheoryUndergraduate courses:• Introduction to Probability• Applied Numerical Computing• Mathematics of Design• Matlab workshopTestimonial:"Cheng-An Yang is without a doubt one of the best TAs I have ever had at UCLA. He is incrediblyknowledgeable and genuinely concerned with our education." -- From Introduction to Probability "One of the best TAs I've had. Very good orator and excellent at explaining and expanding on material." -- From Applied Numerical Computing"Cheng-An is very helpful in explaining complex concepts that were derived from lectures, clearly and methodically." -- From Detection and Estimation Theory"He is pretty clear and fun too." -- From Mathematics of Designs -
InternQualcomm Jun 2014 - Sep 2014San Diego, Ca, Us• When mobile device travels fast, the signal strength varies rapidly. This causes the traditional signal strength feedback mechanism to fail.• As a result, the download speed of moving devices suffer significantly.• I proved that there exists an optimal signal strength feedback mechanism to maximize the download speed and implemented an efficient algorithm to achieve this goal.• More specifically, what I accomplished in this internship: - Developing a clever algorithm to maximize the download speed of fast-moving mobile devices. - Proving the optimality of the proposed algorithm both theoretically and numerically. - Improving download speed of mobile devices up to 80% in our C++ simulator. - This work was patented. -
InternQualcomm Jun 2013 - Sep 2013San Diego, Ca, Us• The nonlinear behavior of Radio Frequency (RF) components results in signal distortion. This distortion degrades the performance of the communication systems.• What I accomplished in this internship: - Developing an unsupervised RF distortion compensation algorithm that resolves both uplink and downlink distortion problem. - Conducting a through analysis of performance/complexity trade-off between various algorithms.• The work earned me the Qualstar exceptional contribution award. -
