Today, I lead æsthetics science for Apple Camera and Photos. Our team conducts investigations, designs prototypes and directly infuses the study of photographic aesthetics into the camera algorithm development process. My mission is to improve the technology that controls our shared visual experiences and support the artists who create them. My work is about responsibly designing the next generation of visual communication tools: that more people can see and feel seen, the way they want to be. I study how photography shapes culture and society, and how we shape photography in turn. Why do we take pictures, and how do those pictures change us?-------------some bio highlights----------------------------My experiences includes two decades of photography, video, social and human-centered AI design:In 2014, I left my role as senior photo editor for National Geographic Magazine to join Instagram as one of its first 60 employees, earning the unique distinction of running the world’s two largest organizational social media accounts (@natgeo and @instagram) between 2012-2018: a historic time when platforms scaled from human-powered content discovery to algorithmic content personalization. As 2019-2020 Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and JSK Journalism Fellow at Stanford University, I sought to better understand the systems I helped to create. I studied the phenomenon of "going viral" via algorithmic recommender systems and its impact on creators and creativity.Prior to that, I supported photographers committed to long-form reportage on human rights issues through grant-making, exhibition and story development at Open Society Foundations. I have been an Emmy-Award winning documentary producer, curator and photojournalist. As a musician, my sound designs appear in broadcast and online publications including The New York Times Magazine, Showtime, Hulu and Wired. Today, I serve on the board of Magnum Foundation, hosted a speaker series for Vital Impacts, and remain an affiliate fellow with Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (Stanford HAI).
